is it me or has Adobe forgot to give us away of backing up a selection of RAW files, I know you can do it when importing but after finishing with the files i like to them back them up on to DVD but they only let me do that in either DNG/JPG/Tiff/PSD not Raw. Have i missed something here or am i right.

That is a very very good question!

I have a feeling you must backup yourself...unless you put your RAW files on a 2nd HDD..and copy them into the ist when you import.

You're right. Although apparently the way Lightroom is made allows for additional modules to be added, either from Adobe or third party, so maybe some enterprising soul will make a Backup Module.

Don't understand why it would be LR's job to do your backup. It's not a backup software. It can backup its database but the user is responsible for backing up your files. None of the DAMs I know do a file-backup.

Apple's Aperture lets you backup from within the software. Lightroom should also they have let you do it but in every format but Raw so they have thought of it but didnt implement it all the way....

Just Export in DNG.
DNG is a RAW file.
It includes the adjustments that you have made to the original.
You can still reset back to the imported raw if you wish.

That decision simply does not make sense. This is Adobe forcing people to adopt DNG as an effort to eliminate competition from the RAW formats; so much for the noble commitment to the open source concept. A lot of folks are shying away from Lightroom, even though so much of the design finally makes Adobe fairly competitive in RAW processing quality and workflow; the traps in the Library design are the limiting factor.

Still don't understand what exactly it is that LR should do with your files? LR changes are non-destructive, i.e. the images files are not touched at all.
What you need to backup are the xmp files and the database.

I have a great backup software (Fileback PC) that backs-up files to network drive(s). It copies all files that are changed. Very safe and clean.

Well, what if your hdd crashes?

I think it is not unreasonable to ask for this backup feature.

I would agree............I think a system that keeps track of archived files...and ones not backup up would not be hard to do.

I like lightroom.........but it is not really finished IMO........

I have to agree with Matteo. As well as my images and Acdsee database I have to backup documents, spreadsheets, address books, mp3, mpeg, etc.

An image editor/manager has no business doing this job. A simple xcopy script does it all
