Ok, I know that everyone keeps taking guesses at the New Nikon, some are quite goofy and others seem possible, but here's a different, very logical viewpoint.

With the 990 twist came the 880 non-twist
With the 995 twist came the 885 non-twist
the 775 non-twist came out being the answer to the older 950 non-twist

now then 5000 non-twist came out leaving a gap in Nikon's predictable line-up for a 5000 twist ?

Sounds logical, though Nikon may not be as predictable as we think, but it shows with every twist camera a non-twist camera came out.

To me this would indicate the new model would sit higher above (more features, capabilites) the 5000, just as the 990 does to the 880 and the 995 does to the 885.

Have you seen the 5000? It does twist. :)
While calling technical support for an unrelated issue. The subject of the new Nikon came up. The tech said the new camera is between the 995 and the 5000 in terms of features etc.
I guess we will just have to wait for the final unveiling.

While I like progress, I like it in measured amounts.....I would prefer to see a better than CP5000 in at least 6-12 months rather than 32 days from when I bought my camera. Aint I selfish for wanting that!

You are not selfish at allllllllllll, everyone here its going to have a heart atack if its a better camera than the CP 5000, and I think for sure that it would be a bad strategy because they will stop selling the 5000 as it is so new

CMON people are you serious!?

It probably will be announced soon with in the next two weeks and will probably will have an expected ship date of April 2,2002. But in street terms we all know with that ship date in mind it wont actually ship till January 15,2003. :) HAHA

Tech support comment below tends to confirm my suspicions...clues all suggest a twist body update to 995...CP5K is quite advanced, so they can now fill the gap and sell another twister to those not ready for the little pro style job. jw.

The single battery, pop up flash and lens series will pin the body size.

An upgrade variation of the 995 (1000? 2500?) could be from 3.1mp to 5+mp CCD and keep the familiar twist lens.

A downgrade variation of the 5000 (2500?) could be 5-mp CCD and reduced manual options and reduced price combination.

A downgrade CP2500 would just be a market gap filler and of no interest to me.

An upgrade of the 5000 would only be in the direction of 6+mp CCD and same body & LCD.

No other component piece of the CP camera line has really evolved except CCD size so I expect to see the 995 extended in this direction.

Else it is the End Of Life of the twist body NIKON CP camera line.

Gee, I would have wanted them to fix the speed of the camera. It was advertized as a "fast" camera. It is not. Maybe a firmware upgrade...

I'd ALMOST consider that a troll remark except Nikon marketing is about as good at predicting the production date of its products as Punxatawny Phil is at predicting the duration of winter (heard tell it's actually about 28% correct). Actually 28% is probably better than Nikon!
:o)

Not ready? That sounds condescending to me. IMHO the twist body allows photographers to expand their physical relationship to the camera. Instead of being stuck looking into one particular side of a little box, the twist photographer can move around the camera, to compose a picture from many more viewpoints. Furthermore you can shoot it like a TLR, from waist level, as well as from eyelevel and places in between. Twist cameras practically feed you shots. I find this so creatively freeing that I would never want to be confined again by an old-fashioned, non-twist camera.

I've heard talk that it may employ new/advanced pixel technology. That it will look more like the 995 is a given. I'm just hoping that it won't be yellow!

To me if it is like the 995 (as far as design is concerned)....and less than the 5000 (as far as megapixels are concerned) than i'll be happy. To me any new camera that is a step above the 995 but not like the 5000 is better than the 5000.

What the line needs most is to fix the serious major design flaw of the CP 5000: the strobe sensor is right below the shutter release, logically partially blocked/reflected by a normal hand grip for many users. Incorrect exposures when using flash are very common with the CP 5000, which is not acceptable for a $1k digicam. My testing seems to indicate that the incredibly poor sensor location may be the sole cause; however, my sample size is one...

The CP 5000 image quality once you achieve proper exposure is awesome. I doubt if Nikon intends to go backwards in that regard. In any event we will know 2002FEB21.

And personally I hope that better digicams and better computers do continue to come out every 30 days! :-)
