Caution: Bug in vista can damage RAW files

I need to set up a separate machine to play with it. A guy at work uses the Suse version and loves it. So I could pick his brain which would be a great help :)

I'm just very attached to some of my Windows programs that are not currently available for Linux.

Still, it's probably just a matter of time before it happens.

If they "just work" why would apple have to release updates to its
RAW support?
Your sentiment is right to a point, but not your facts. The raw support update in question was a free update courtesy of Apple to provide support the raw formats for some of the new digital SLRs. It wasn't a bug fix, it was a service, and a welcome one to the mac using owners of those cameras.

This doesn't mean Macs are without issues. They are computers and all computers have issues that need to be resolved. However the fact is, the "It just works" label is extremely well deserved. Apple have employed a lot of good people and have provided a highly stable, robust and secure computing environment that allows people access to creative computing power without many of the hassles enjoyed by the users of other brands.

The advice "consider getting a Mac" in response to a tale of woe from some poor user is not primarily a trolling activity, it can be a genuine attempt to inform the poor user that there is an alternative where far fewer issues is the norm.

In most cultures the striving for and achieving of excellence is something worthy of acknowledment.

Sorry Justme for the delay in replying. But these days I'm extremely busy. Golf became an obsession.... a frustrating obsession. I still play at least once a week when my schedule allows and now I'm trying to get back into photography. I purchased a 30D and a few lenses. I'll probably start posting soon when I get some decent shots.

Interestingly, I went to the store today to buy my wife a new Mac ibook, one of those nice white ones with the 1 gig of RAM and an 80 gig hard drive. Looks much like the 3/4 year old one she has now, but much better.

The computer guy in the store showed me the machine and told me all about it's features. As I was about to do the deal I said, "My wife is familiar with the Mac and the OS she has, will she have any problem with the new OS?" "No problem," he said. "She'll love it."

Then, as my eye lit over to where the Windows machines were I said, "What about a Windows machine? If I'm buying a new machine, would it be better to switch her to Windows?" I expected him to say, no way.

Instead he looked around and said in a quiet voice, "I don't like to tell this to many customers. Apple people would go bananas. But the fact is, as far as I'm concerned, these machines are overpriced for what you get and the supposed advantage of the Mac OS just isn't there anymore. You get your wife a machine with the new Windows softwear, she'll figure it out in no time and it's far more stable and she'll be able to do more."

I looked amazed. He shrugged his shoulders and said, "The world has moved. Apple people don't want to admit it. They'll go to their graves defending Apple and they're good laptops, but they aren't as good as the Windows machines and you pay a lot more."

I left the store without buying her a new laptop to think about this.

I don't want to get into a tussle with Apple fans. I don't have a clue when it comes to computers. But this guy impressed me and so I pass along what he said. Make of it what you will.

I'm not so sure is that bug in vista or has Nikon done something
weird with their raw format.
Just wondering cos I haven't found same kind of warning about that
problem and Canon raw files.
Has Canon provided codecs for Vista yet? I've only read (at that link and elsewhere) about Nikon, Sony, and Olympus.

The RAW support hasn't come from Canon yet, note the source it will be coming from "Canon" not "Microsoft", just like all the other manufacturers RAW codecs. Perhaps Canon are just being slow, or perhaps they are being cautious and making sure they do it right before releasing it.

Damn Mac troll... Just kidding. =)

I just wanted to second that Macs are great for working with graphics. Never used a Mac till 4 years ago, when I was forced into it by my college graphic design program. Ive had my G5 now for 2 1/2 years and love it! Ill never go back to a PC again unless my job requires it. Ive used CS2 professionally on a PC and it was fine. No particular problems. Mac's, to me at least, seem faster with more streamlined interfaces. Of course I know people who will argue tooth and nail that its just the opposite. Hey whatever works for ya, but I love Macs. Like the first Mac troll said, excellent for digital imaging.

all microsoft did was reinvent OSX and try to call it their own....and yet Apple plans on releasing their updated OS later this year, which will, yet again, blow away Vista....

there was nothing wrong with XP...now we have a OS that was made from scratch, FILLED will bugs, and there is limited to zero support for it.

its a sad day for microsoft....too little to late

that being said, i don't own a mac, i am a strick PC user, and i am ok to admit that Mac has somthing that window's users really won't ever get to experience anytime soon...

I think you are correct.

Canon is "High Level” Partner with Microsoft and they have been working together on several recent enhancements for digital imaging/color management.
I feel that this particular RAW problem does not involve Canon.

On a side note: The software shipping with the 1D MkIII is supposed to be certified for Vista.

For older model cameras: Vista support was just released for the ZoomBrowser and PhotoStitch programs.

Canon has asked us to be patient; they should have the rest of the programs ready in the near future

rant..........
I know Vista vs OSX is not for this forum, but...........

There are more certified programs ready today for Vista; than have ever even been written for Mac's OSX
Is Widows is getting closer to Mac?
I meen - built for new users who don't know how to use a (PC)computer.
Yes - For my use it has passed Mac by with XP SP2.

(I think the new "Time Warp" (I think it is called that) a detailed "Go Back" type recovery feature in the next version of mac OS which is very similar to Roxio Go Back for windows is a great idea. To be able to select a complete day or a single file to restore by DATE alone is great idea. The problem with the original "Go Back" program from about 6 years ago in windows was if you had a "hardware" failure it was useless)

When it comes to graphics, Intel based pc's were not near as good as Mac's in the past, but with the newest processors (Core 2 Duo used in the newest Mac's also) the field has completly evened out.
You can still get 100X+ the programs for a PC than for a Mac.
I use both OSX and XP-Pro daily and I prefer the Windows machine for everything.
From about eight to four years ago that would not have been my answer.
My opinion - XP is better than Mac and Vista will be even better.

Actually this is like one of Vista's features. The old recovery points that XP (and ME to a lesser extent) introduced have been extended to files and folders as well as system files and executables. You can now go back to previous versions of files, folders or the entire system, useful if you delete something or make a change to a file and save over the original.

I recommend going to XP at least. As for Linux. Give it a try if you have an older machine that isn't running anything. It's easier than you think. I run 3 linux systems (Fedora), one as a web/email server and I'm pretty happy with them.. I still use XP for photoshop, but I may give up on Microsoft altogether in a year or 2.
