Hi!

I have some questions about DOF.

The kit lense does not have a DOF scale. How can I easily know if I have enough DOF?

In a landscape I would probably want to have a DOF from the subject to infinity. How can I do it?

Thank you.

That is a great site. Either print a DOF chart for your lens or pick a couple and remember them.

For landscapes...

Generally at 28mm and wider for landscapes:

f/8 for focus on infinity with nothing important within 20 feet of the camera.

f/11 focussed at infinity and anything 6 feet away from the camera to infinity will be in focus.

f/16 for about 3 feet away from the camera to infinity in focus.

If you need more specific than that, then break out the chart.

Just as I think I am getting the hang of photography I read a thread like this with a link to the DOF information... I am quickily reminded I know virtually nothing about photog.... I think I need a book that can teach me in a structured format. I've picked up pearls of wisdom and information from this forum, but I constantly find my head spinning!!

Any good book recomendations for a true beginner?

Thanks for the reco. I just bought the book from Amazon. I think you take great photos, so I trust you've made a good book recommedation!

Thanks. Many people here recommend that book too. I never understood until I found it in the book store. I was already fairly advanced photographically when I found the book, but I was impressed enough to pick it up.

It provides good overall understanding of photography with specifics for SLR that really help.

Best of luck!
