Most influential Photographers

Hi all,

I was recently in a book store looking for a single photography book that named and analyzed the styles of the most influential photographers that ever lived. I was unable to find such a book, and even asked the more experienced gentleman beside me who was also browsing the Photography section. He said that no such book existed - he'd never come across one in all his years of photography.

Can anyone name me some photographers to look up as I get more interested in photography? I don't care what style they have expertise in, but I would like to know some names and their area of influence.

Obviously I already know Ansel Adams for landscape photography. But that's where my name-familiarity ends. Please tell me which photographers have influenced you the most and how. I'd like to learn more about the top photographers and their styles to get more ideas.

Thanks!
Jennifer

I don't know about influential, but Gianni Berengo Gardin is pretty mischievous and his pictures often make me laugh out loud as I notice some hidden facet that slipped my gaze at first glance. He sets an atmospheric, almost classical scene, but then you notice a pair of feet sticking out from under a table or some equally bizarre detail.
Try doing a google image search.

Great topic, and there is no end to it.

How about:
Edward Weston - 1920's - 1950's
Cindy Shermam - Current
Richard Avedon - fashion, portraits, & journalism - into 1990's
James Nachtwey - War photos & journalism http://www.jamesnachtwey.com
Farm Security Admin photographers - America in the Great Depression
(includes Dorothea Lange, et. al.)

this is a book that you might like...i think it's a great book as it has broadened my photographic knowledge tremendously...it shows you some of the greatest photographs in history and tell you how you can achieve similar results with modern equipment...a bio of the photographer accompanies each of the photographs also...you probably won't regret purchasing this..
