Anybody here running Vista having problems with Photoshop data loss? Or any other probelm for that matter.

Since I'm getting no response how about this............

Longtime windows user needs new laptop. Looking for help deciding whether it's worth it to go with Mac as I am leary of Vista and it's almost impossible to get a laptop without it.

Can you provide some more detail? What data are you losing or what other specific problems are you having with PS on Vista? Also, what type of files are you working with and what camera model?

Thanks,

Have a couple of boxes running Vista without problems, and as far as I'm concerned it's a better OS then XP on all accounts. I was skeptical of Vista at first given my pronounced hatred of XP, but working on Win2000 and 2003 as workstation operating systems all day tends to make you hate ANY desktop OS. Installed Vista on a dual core 1.6ghz AMD laptop and it's flat out faster than XP which it it was previously running.

Vista surprised me. It's where XP should have gone in the first place and it's not the big joke the press has made it out to be.

I haven't bashed CS2 that hard on Vista as I want, but so far no big problem. Have to run it in Admin mode to get activation to work, but nothing major, and there are a lot of apps that requires that. I blame these problems on CS2 more than Vista frankly because I don't think the bugs were ever entirely shaken out of CS2.

I woulnd't throw an Apple user a life-ring if they needed it, but the objective and honest anser to your question is the Apple portable should allow you to run either OS, correct? The paranoia surrounding Vista is coming mostly from those whos jobs have already been, or about to be outsourced to India and it will turn it to be mostly unfounded. Still, OSX is a mature OS, and Vista has a year or so to shake out bugs.

I am running CS2 under Vista Ultimate. After an initial problem getting the online registration to stick, it has worked fine. Some plugins are not working with Vista and my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet and pen have been flaky with sudden freezes - driver problems which Wacom is working on I am sure.

Very much a personal opinion. But I have encountered significant problems on certain specific hardware platforms. Aka VIA KT400 is a def no no..despite being a very popular chipset..

Aside from that limited problem...Vista has some nice stuff...lets be fair..

Nice simple install....much improved..dead easy

Depending on how you view it..the new explorer is either great (once you get used to it)..or just not as simple as the one in XP. In some ways it seems they did too much...instead of just keeping what was good..and improving it.

User account control is just plain invasive...I predict most will turn it off! Its great to have a warning etc...but do we really need major dim screen in yer face? No.....just one area that is a bit poor.

Sidepanel..nice enough...
Mini preview windows...again nice enough
Flip 3D...interesting..but not really essential...
Upgrade vista...hmmm I really find this a bit cheeky...no thanks!
System score..again not a lot of use at present.

In fact being blunt despite MS and the wow things have really changed..the haven't that much...much to do about nothing being 100% honest....aero is nice..but hardly a reason for upgrading in itself.

And some things just work better the old way..classic start menu always got me as the best...(but of course you can change it)

Preformance wise...1Gb systems run ok...though power users will want more RAM..2Gb I would say.

Maybe in 12 months down the road..it might be ready..as it is...nice but no cigar..have to say I do prefer OS X overall....

While I personally prefer a mac when I have a choice, if you have no interest in OS X, there's little sense in buying a mac. I would check your local office supply and big box stores. Around here there are a number of good in-store deals right now on their leftover windows laptops that have XP installed, if you are reluctant to move to Vista yet.

If you're used to Windows and you're thinking of getting a new machine anyway, then a new machine with Vista pre-installed is probably fine for you - no upgrade hastles (missing drivers, etc.). :-)

True no hassles..but ahem there are some software compatability problems....I know there were a few with XP..but this seems larger overall

Good point. I've already found that one little utility I use a lot is not Vista compatible, although the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor didn't spot it. I found out by checking with the developer.

And there are also some hardware problems to watch out for. Even if the laptop comes with Vista pre-installed and has no hardware problems, some of the hardware attached to the old machine may not work with the new one because drivers aren't available. Examples that come to mind are printers, scanners, card readers, external hard drives, display colorimeters, etc.

I'm getting a new desktop system later this week and I've decided to stick with Windows XP until Vista SP1 comes out and then run the Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor to get an initial list of problems, and then do additional checking.

I just finished putting together a brand new high end Intel based 775 system after testing Vista Ultima 64bit for 2-3 weeks.

The only thing I really miss is the Canon codec for RAW view CR2 and thumbnail.

Until Canon comes with a solution I downloaded here

http://www.faststone.org/FSViewerDetail.htm

works super fast with 8GB MC RAW CR2 files.

Adobe PS CS2 install went flawless, BUT you have to DISable user acct BEfore you install it.

I had not driver problems with any of the hardware and it;s running great and fast.

My experience with Vista during the testing time was..

on my AMD 64bit mobo with 2GB ram vista 32 bit was as slow as molasses
and Vista Ultimate 64 bit very fast.

It's true not all appz are compatible but there are enough that I am NOT Suffering without them!!!

I'm not looking back and glad I made the switch!

Any question...I be glad to answer!

Don't believe the (mis)hype. I installed Vista on my six year old PC, it installed fine, Vista installed all the correct drivers for everything I have apart from my printer. As long as you have a Direct X 9 graphics card, and at least a gig of memory, Vista is brilliant. I recommend it.

HOWEVER

it may be worth waiting until Adobe CS3/Lightroom 1.5/Capture One v4/iView 4 etc are released if you are using it for a production PC. Hold off until the summer at least.

Hi David.....I have a new Dell XPS410 with Vista Home Premium and before it arrived on Feb. 12th I went to the WACOM site and downloaded the drivers for WACOM and Vista and I have had no problems in fact I think it is better than before. If I remember correctly, I think that I used the "Program Compatibility Wizard" when I installed the drivers.

I'd get the Apple Notebook; you can always install WinXP or Vista on it if you feel you need to.
