Hi guys,

in a couple of weeks my dream will become true and I'll go for a trip to Cuba...4 days in L'Habana and 12 days in Cayo Coco...the 1 last day in L'Habana and back to UK...

Do you have any advices? Any particular places to visit?
Any particular things to do (or not to do)?

I already decided that I'll bring all my (insured...) equipment with me, and I'll leave what I am not using in the safe in the Hotel...

Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Ciao!!

You will have alot of fun in Cuba. Spend some time touring Old Havana. It is very safe there as long as you don't flash too much wealth in the wrong part of town, late at night. I would do it without a tour guide (or use one for the first day only) and take your time. Actually felt safer there than most other places i've been too. Carry around a few loose Peso's because costumed people expect to get paid for posing for the camera. Bring a light tripod for some great interior shots of old buildings and churches. It costs a couple of Peso's to see most interiors and a couple more to take photos but a few buildings are free. Check out the excursions to other parts of Cuba but be prepared to pay a premium. Swimming with the dolphins cost us $300.00 and a tour of Havana was more.

Take your own food with you. Unless you are prepared to spend 40 USD per meal for one person at a tourist restaurant. I took a travel kettle and loads of pot noodles, powdered mash potato, biscuits, chocolate, crisps etc and made it through one week in Havana no problem. Worth it because it is the most photogenic place on earth.

I agree with it

The shops with peso convertible(a currency fir the tourist), have astronomic prices, it is the way Fidel takes more money from the tourists

And be prepared to pay the last fee: in the airport you have to pay an extra to leave Cuba

I will go there when Fidel disappear

Mojitos at La Bodeguita del Medio and Daiquiris at El Floridita. I don't like Mojitos, but I love Daiquiris (the Hemingway special -double rhum is the best!!!) But you'll eat better at La Bodeguita.

AH! check twice before you get a friend, there are jineteros/as everywhere...

I stayed in Varedero a few years ago and made regular trips into Havana. It's a fantastic place and very photogenic. There are dozens of little museums and the obligatory fifties style cars are everywhere and just begging to be photographed. The fort is good for pictures if you get the right time of day for the right light. Expect to spend some money on art. I spent loads buying paintings from the street sellers in one of the squares. The only thing you need to be ready for is the airport - we spent four hours crammed into a tiny cigar smoke filled room waiting to get through customs with no air-con. But that aside it's a great place to be going to. If you can do some scuba diving, there are some great caves just off the beach near Varedero. Have fun.
