Cullmann Magic Tripod

Matt,

If you're still shopping for the Magic Koh's it can be had a bit cheaper at http://www.kohscamera.com

$109 for EITHER the Magic2 OR the Magic Video (pan head).

Does anyone know anything about this dealer?

Oh, the ebay Vivitar arrived today... who wants to be the first in line to say "I told you so". You were are right, cheap legs just ain't worth their hassle - it's outta here.

Terry,

My tripod arrived today - it's superb. Absolutely amazing. I really recommend it.

It feels very well made and solid...just like I hoped. Given its size, weight and height it is also very stable.

how do you think it would work for someone who's 6'3"??

This tripod looks great, but I'm wondering if I'm gonna get a sore neck if I have to slouch down while looking through the viewfinder a lot....

thanks in advance,

Jim

hi jim,

I am 6´2" and I am owning the cullman magic for a couple of years now. using it together with the g2 is really no problem, since you can twist the monitorscreen.

however, if you are taking pictures with a standard SLR camera you will have to bend down quite a bit. taking many pictures in this position is a rather anoying thing to do.

anyway, the cullmann magic tripod is still the best choice for travelling. at home I use my Manfrotto tripod. on vacations the cullmann is my first choice.

I'm 6'1 and have no problems - but the G2 does have a flip LCD.

I think it extends to about 5'.

If you'd have trouble at 6'3", imagine the trouble faced by some guy at 6'5" :-)

Anyway, the only thing that scares me away from Magic 2 is the exchange rate and duties. I'll get a tank instead.

If you order from B&H then you can get them to send by USPS. I read somewhere that you just pay a fixed $5 handling. I'm afraid I can't help you with the exchange rate. Maybe Henry's stock it, or can get it for you in Canada.

$5 is very attractive if I live in the USA, but since I don't, the cost is actually $20-something minimum via airmail.

Ahh well.

P.S. Can the Bogen/Manfrotto Mini Ball Head carry the load of the G2 with the 420EX attached? It couldn't possibly be that heavy a load, but I just want to make sure.

I have read a few threads on the Bogen 3001 / 3009 Ball Head Combination. Apparently it can easily support the G2 and 420EX. One reviewer even used it for his EOS SLR.

I am sure that you can find the Cullman Magic 2 in Canada somewhere - have you tried calling Henry's? I am sure they can get it for you.

By the way, the Magic 2 comes complete with QR and Ballhead. It's great.

Hey Matt -

Can you take some pictures of it in action, so we can see how thick the legs are, how tall it is, how the ballhead and quick release look etc.
I'm thinking about getting one although I'd also want a pan head for panoramas.
Thanks for this thread - lots of great info in here.

Thanks for the tip, Matt.

Anyway, the numbers that I got for buying the Magic 2 from B&H comes out at roughly $330 CDN. The same figure could buy myself the Bogen combo you mentioned earlier and then some, all without the pesky duties (and the stamp by Canada Post for handling shipments from outside the border :-). So here's my list (slotted in May):

Bogen 3001PRO (legs only)
3009 Ball Head
Reversible Spiked Feet for 3001/3021
Junior Monopod

It sucks to buy local, though sometimes prices are cheaper here.--Printer Boy http://www.printerboyweb.net/ (warning: offensive material inside)

Matt,

I would second Emese's request and raise it to a plea...

Photos would solidify my convictions that the M2 is the tripod I need. The Vivitar is going up on the auction block today... I may take a $10 hit but this one is just not acceptable.

Photos and a brief description would be marvelous. My primary questions would be:

what's a good close view of ball head look like? (a couple of angles?)

How stable is it when kicked over 90 degrees (it will?)

If I want to rotate the camera around an axis for panorama shots what sort of luck will I have with just the ball head, or is this a lost cause to wait for an accessory head?

What's the QR mechanism like.

I've got a pretty fair mental image (I think) of the leg mechanism and like the earlier comments about tightening only the lower ring to fix the entire length - neat trick!

If you could help with any of these questions you'll confirm my choice.

Thanks,

Terry

This fellow has a nice setup with a few photos that might be useful to some of the folks here. There are still a few angles I'd like to see (Matt, if you have the time?) but this helps me out.

Matt, can you confirm his comments about a freely rotating center post rather than a locked post? This would help with my questions about panning.

Yes, the center post rotates freely when the the lock ring is eased. Also, if pannpanos are very important to you, look at the video version, for $10 more it comes with a 3 way pan head. You could get that then buy a ball head, like a small Stroboframe ($23 from B&H) which is actually smaller and lighter than the Cullman ball head. That would give you the best of all worlds.

Cullmann 2722 Magic 2 Tripod W/b&s Head
is $104.95 from Adorama.com
with 11 dollar shipping it comes out to 116, still cheapor
then the asking price of b&h.
the dillemia im faced with is it better to get the video one
and then get a ball head or better to get the regular one
then get a panarama head.

That depends on whether you want/need a QR release. The ball head comes with one. I find it a bit of a pain, because you need to mount the QR to the camera then mount the assembly to the tripod. I'm shopping for a small ball head now, probably a Stratoframe, which is a nice small, light German made head. I wish now that I had bought the pano head, that way I'd have one of each. You might consider doing the same.

Now, if anyone with a pano head wants to buy my Cullman QR head or trade for it, that would work. (I suppose I just broke some very important rule, didn't I? .

I don't have much choice but to buy local. Even at that price, I'd have to include the price of a pano head and the $5-plus charge to let Canada Post handle the stuff. Oh well.--Printer Boy http://www.printerboyweb.net/ (warning: offensive material inside)
