Anybody made the jump to Lightroom today?

Yes, I think NX dose a better job of "Auto" White Balance better than anything I have seen. They all work the same when I shoot a grey card.

The control points are really great for spot problems.

like I do, and the cost of upgrading to CS3 will actually be a little less than buying Lightroom, which would you chose for PPing your NEF files (assuming you did not really need CS3 for anything else)? I figure I might as well stick with Photoshop, but am wondering if there is a compelling reason to get Lightroom and not upgrade to CS3.

Well lightroom isn't an alternative to photoshop like some seem to think. It is designed around managing, organizing, sorting, and editing raw files. Quite frankly... compared to lightroom... photoshop/bridge is a HORRIBLE photo management program. Lightroom becomes the photo manager/raw editor, and Photoshop remains the pixel editor.

I am strongly considering it. I downloaded the trial over the
weekend, and so far I like it. I still need to try printing, and
learn more about the database feature.

Hopefully it won't be long for new modules to be released, because
I would love a Noise Ninja module. PictureCode stated that they
are looking into it, but Adobe hasn't released any development
information for 3rd parties yet.
You can set up Noise Ninja as the secondary edit app and will then show up in the Photo menu.

Lots of people have this problem. I wrote some things at the following, but they won't give you a definite answer. It is clear from many forums that people differ so much in this matter!

So, it is more of a browser and raw processor than anything else? I didn't see it as just being a front end to CS2/3. Well, I guess that means I will just have to try it myself. Is it still a freebie for CS2 owners?

because I am the owner of Raw Shooter Premium. The company behind Raw Shooter was bought by Adobe and part of that deal was to let their customers get a free copy of Lightroom. Converted my 1st NEF and there are lots of things to learn...

I also got the same deal and installed it a little while ago, for my first look. Unfortunately, something went wrong with the install and it went south. Uninstall, reinstall apparently fixed the problem.

My first impressions are like yours. LOTS of stuff to learn here.... :-) Right now, I can do what I need, much faster and easier with bridge and CS2. So, lightroom is going to sit on my back burner until I have more time to play with it.

Got my email this evening. I had already downloaded it in anticipation.

Firefox didn't get me through to the correct page fortuneately when I clicked IE view I was on the correct page with a serial number. david

I continue to be more and more impressed with LightRoom. It's core concept of a database takes some getting used to and I'm sure that carried to the nth degree, you could drive yourself crazy with keywords.

Having said that, you can, without a minimum of effort, search through the metadata of your images by the lens used. Very handy.

The printing module works better for me than anything I was able to achieve in Photoshop. And the web gallery is pretty slick; collect some images and publish to your website.

No size limit. It's just that every photo goes into the library. Unless you stack images from folders the library get's very full and useless.

Hey Jay - Any restrictions with the academic version?

Are you eligible for upgrades?

Thanks

I got my free download yesterday. Using firefox I got straight through to the correct page, downloaded and installed with no problems. But I am still not sure that I like it. I would prefer to be able to move the palettes onto my second monitor and use all of my primary for the image as I do in just about every other imaging programme that I use.

I agree with that, Eric. Not being able to move the palettes is rather a throwback in time, too long ago to be dealing with that now......

I did a batch job on 600 images overnight. The JPG's didn't turn out quite like the previews showed. They were a little overcooked, so I suppose I goofed something along the way.

I don't know but it seems likely that PS CS3 and Llghtroom will be offered in a bundle when it is released at a greatly reduced price. According to this website http://notes.thinksecret.com/secretnotes/0702psnote.shtml the release of CS3 may be on 03/27/07. If it is, then we should know soon thereafter if there will be a CS3/Lightroom bundle available for reduced price. In any event we have until end of April to decide and a lot can happen in 2 months. I don't see any reason to buy Lightroom just yet. At some point, I will get Lightroom. I like it better than Aperture even on my high end Mac.

Just my opinion, but I see at a future date, that Lightroom will replace Bridge. If you have Lightroom I can not imagine any reason to use Bridge. If you dissagree, please let me know why. I can however see some people buying Lightroom and not PS if all they want to do is WB and exposure repairs etc. PS is more of a graphic design program with some great photography plug ins.

Yeah when you have dual 19" of real estate to play with (3x at work) it would be nice, I also find that even if I auto-hide the tools I 'over shoot' and windup on the second monitor, I have to think where I stick the mouse or the palette won't come back...

That being said I did rather fudge it to give my self more room. Locked the palette open and dragged the window size right over to the second until the edge of the imaging area lined up with my monitor break... not perfect... but work able....

That being said, as an organizer, database, day to day catalog of my library I have tried aperture, and bridge, heck I even used iphoto for a time, been using lightroom since early beta's and always been happy with it....

bought the full blown tonight... after being away from it for a month or so... its like an old friend...

Yep, I figure CS3 bundles will include an option with Lightroom too. I've read rumours of no less than 6 bundle options for CS3. That's why I'm holding off buying Lightroom now as I want to upgrade my full suite of apps at once.

As far as Bridge, I disagree with you. Lightroom only previews photos, Bridge previews all files in a project, AI, EPS, TIFF, INDD etc. making project management a snap.
