I've heard a rumor that Canon is coming out with a "Hybrid" camera/camcorder along the lines of the Sanyo Xacti models. These, of course, are very small and use the MPEG 4 video format. The Sanyos are quite good when they work but not very reliable and Sanyo has a terrible warranty.

A hybrid would seem to be a natural for Canon since they have mastered the video modes in their still cameras probably better than any other manufacturer. The market would seem to be wide open for a hybrid with Canon name and quality.

Has anyone else heard of this potential new product?

What is suggested is a video cam that is also a stills cam. Whatever the resolution, these are unlikely to be of great value to serious stills photographers. What maximum shutter speedwould we be happy with? 1/60 sec.?...

You may be right about "serious" still photographers, whatever that means, And, as for video, some people would be unhappy with nothing less than the equipment used by CBS news. There are many people that will sacrifice the ultimate in quailty for portability and ease of use. Right now, Canon makes still cameras that take excellent videos, they are just a tad large. The little Sanyo Xactis are true hybrids and take EXCELLENT stills and pretty good videos. Their problem is reliability coupled with lousy warranties.

To the point, there is probably a huge market for a true hybrid for sportsmen, hikers, soccer moms, or anyone that likes to have a cameracorder with them a lot of the time. If Canon comes out with something that lives up to the quality of their S3 or 710 for video and stills,....but smaller, I think they'll be well received. It'll happen sooner or later.

Apparently Canon have released lots of different prototypes to test out different ideas, amoungst them even something in the 1DII series with video capabilities - as good a sports photographer as Steve Mitchell said that that would be useful - video clips are being increasingly used.

Doesn't look like the idea has made it into the final cut this time, but it is coming...
DIGICIII and DIGICIV( Canon's video chip) combined in DIGIC V?)

low resolution recording mode is limited to 60 frames per second. I'm looking for a higher frame rate to record golf swings.

Personally, I'd like the S3is more than the new canon. The lens is 3.5-5.6 To me that's really slow. I don't need the new 60fps or HDTV mode. If I want high quality video, I'd get a dedicated video camera. This camera seems too much like a camera to be a camcorder and too much like a camcorder to be a good camera. I'm not interested at all. That's my personal take, feel free to have your opinion.
