Lightroom: pain and pleasure, mostly pain

It is kind of funny in that it keeps asking me to upgrade to B4.1,
but what I have identifies it's self as Lightroom 1.0, not Beta 4
on the about page.
What does it say as the default identity plate (upper left corner)?
It also has a Feb 28th license expiration date.
I think all the 1.0s expire later than that.
Anyways, I'll be getting a licensed copy as soon as finances allow.
Better get it before the end of April when the price goes from $199 to $299.

OK, I just loaded it up and it looks promising. It is still sucking my 9k+ library in -- should take another hour or so. But it is pretty fast even when it is still importing. That is notisably better than B4.1.

So far, it has crashed three times trying to bring in my photos. Looks like it recovers but it is clear that this thing is still not ready for prime time.

CS3 Raw & bridge has the balance of what we're used to now but just improved with easier ways to handle searches and categorize.

RAW conversions have been enhanced with quite a few features taken from Lightroom (Lightroom Lite if you will) such as Fill light, recovery, black, vibrance sliders.

You can also alter the 8 individual colour tones with Hue, saturation and luminance and if you convert to grayscale the 8 tones are used as a grayscale mix.

Other features seen in Lightroom are Split toning with highlights and shadow, 2 tone curves etc.

Sure I've got a photographic memory...... just needs developing!

(Plus presets). For the record, CS3 beta can process JPEGs and TIFFs in ACR as well as raw. (It shouldn't be called "Adobe Camera Raw" anymore!) All the above features apply to these too.

I saw a tantalising hint somewhere that the ACR in the final release of CS3 would have a spot-tool. Perhaps ACR will have clone/heal/red-eye features like Lightroom at release? But I haven't seen any confirmation of this, so it is unwise to rely on it.

Mac or Windows? I've been using it for 2 months and trying to make it crash. I haven't had a single crash in all that time.

You should go to the U2U forums and post your system setup. Apparently there has been some incompatibility with certain NVidia software, though I have no idea if that's your issue.

Windows.

I was doing things while it as it was importing like running the scroll bars on the left hand side (folder list) and the scroll bars on the thumb display, looking for the speed issues that I had seen with B4. Definitely quicker and smoother based on limited use so far. It is still a bit jerky on scrolling though but not unusable like B4.

Rendering is a bit strange. The thumbs seem to take a while to render. I am not used to seeing this in other programs I use.

OK, I'll do this as soon as I get a chance.

You really need to read and follow the FAQ recommendations listed at http://www.lightroomextra.com/ . There are suggestions about how to import, how to set your standard previews, what the "three dots" means and what to do about those, and to let all activity stop before messing with stuff.

Yep. There is a lot of good info there. I'll study that a bit more tonight when I get home. I am not sure the rendering is correct -- need to check.

Thanks for your help.
