Hi,

I'm thinking about purchasing an E20 or a Nikon 5000 for an upcomming trip to Australia and I want to get the best possible print results. Would anyone recommend the Olympus P400 or offer alternatives.

Many Thanks.

Hi Gerry,

The P400 will give you superb results. I have two of them.

I agree that the P-400 produces superb results. It does justice to my Olympus E-10, as well as my Canon S100, and my mavelous OpenGL animation frames.

Just be aware that the supplies for the P-400 may be a little hard to get, and are not that cheap, as compared to a good inkjet printer.

Bye.

Yes the P400 is a fine thermal printer , the papper suplys is a bit more problem to find in Europe than US ,the price tag i lots higher in Europe....
But beware that the price of the printer haves drop down to the bottom .
In Germany i have see prices like 300$ US ..
The last drop down happent before 2 months time ..

The printer worth the money,if you will use it to print A4 size photos.

As the cost of the page is the same , even if you print one simple dot with it ..

The P400 works fine with the XP and the USB conection.
You have just to use the Windows 2000 driver that works fine with the XP too ..
Gerry,

I hear Windows XP is a problem with the P-400 when using USB and
Oly does not have the drivers for XP yet. Hopefully someone can
verify this.

Hi Gerry.

I like my P400 a lot and I am very glad I got it, but I do suggest having a larger format inkjet also. There I think epsons are good.
Good luck: Will Walton

...I was able to get it with a whooping $500 rebate, last year, which Olympus did honor with the purchase of my E10. I actually bought for my wife, since she wanted to be able to print as good or better than her film-based paper copies. She actually admits that the P400 actually does a better job.

The E20 shows better spatial resolution performance than the CoolPix 5000, according to P. Askey's review. I believe that such difference would be even more important if you plan to use the P400, which will deliver to you any (even the slightest) improvement in extra detail captured by the camera.

Be aware that Color Management is an issue with the P400. It's output gamut is slightly narrower than a standard sRGB gamut, therefore you need an ICM color profile. There are a couple available (that I know of).

Kindest regards,

Ferenc
