F11 portrait

Do you use auto white balance? The skin tone looks quite good. Why doesn´t mine auto white balance work that well?

Tip: On the F11 you can actully zoom and force the f. down to 2,8, by turning macro on. Try it out.

yes, that was auto WB.

re: "forcing f2.8 while zoomed in macro", can you talk me thorugh that as it doesn't seem to work for me?

Turn on macro. Try zoom like 3 steps( just after the red mode sign in the corner), that makes the wide effekt go away, and gets closer to "how the human eye see" (50mm). Now just make your focus, those your composition. Shot.

In the camera the info will say f3.7. But when you export the picture, the info will be f2.8. I know! this is just info. But try it out and see the diffrence.

hmm .. i tried what you suggested.
the cam reports aperture F3.7
.. as does photoshop.
did i do something wrong?
there was a "max aperture" entry of F2.8 -- could this be misleading you?

Might. I just heard it from a guy in this Fuji forum. I could see the diffrent, liked the tip and passed it.

thanks for passing it on -- i appreciate any tips. i've wondered myself if the macro mode could be employed in non-macro situations to flatten the DOF.

it seems whatever i do on the f11, short of faking-it via PP, i can't get the "bokeh" effect in portraits that the F1.8 lens on the c5050z gives.

The DOF seemed lower with the macro turned on, that was what I liked about that tip.

faking it via PP?

"bokeh" effect?

sounds intresting... what is that?

Of course! post proccesing.

And shooting with 800 ISO, 3 steped zoom and macro on. Dosen´t giv the bokeh effect... I don´t know, but I would like to, too.

"bokeh" refers to the out-of-focus areas in pics eg. the fuzzed-out
background in the portrait below (from my oly 5050z). i'm
struggling to get this effect from the fuji except by resorting to
PP trickery ie. selecting the background and applying a gaussian
blur.
The fujis have a slightly larger sensor (1/1.7" versus 1/1.8" on the c5050z), so they actually have a very slight depth of field advantage at the same focal length and aperture. Under those conditions, the bokeh will be the same or better on the fuji.

But the c5050z has bigger apertures available at longer focal lengths, which means those conditions do not aplpy. This gives it a big advantage for portraits.

That being said, this example has pretty nasty looking bokeh, the background is far too recognizable and distracts. Which is, of course, why large sensor cameras are used for portraits in the first place.

don't forget the c5050z also has slightly fewer pixels -- 5MP against 6MP on the fuji but the advantage of the lens is huge: 1.8-2.6 compared to 2.8-5.

OK the oly's bokeh isn't what you'd get on a dSLR but it allows quite pleasing subject-isolation for portraits. if i could get that on my f11 i'd be more than happy!

A pity really , that this incessant desire to post pics "without any PP" has here I think spoiled what could have been a quite impressive shot. A modest crop would easily eliminate entirely the slightly distracting bottom edge of a wall-picture , and I think MOST of the extra on the right could probably be cropped out without much effect on the finish , which could well then benefit greatly with a little control on the slight excess on the hat top AND easily get rid of a bit of PF on the top edges too.

WHY is this so often done , and a very good pic less well shown than it deserves !!

thanks, valid points made and i'd seek to improve that pic if i was going to publish it.

but the reason for no PP in this case was to show what the cam could do -- not photoshop -- for purely technical interest.

Yes - I do understand - and that is more than useful TO YOU .. but I think is better kept as YOUR interest and information. Do yourself good ..AND proud , to give that bit of attention to it THEN post 'to the world' and be further proud of what a good example it could then be.

Remember .. others will get a lot of encouragement and advice from your pic that way , than one that leaves something less than is possible.

I'm in the market for a pocket-sized camera and so have been visiting the Fuji forum for a few weeks now (have a Canon 300D so normally hang-out there) - I appreciate the posting of non-post processed images (particularly in regards to noise reduction, etc.)

eric -

Yes - after my last post , just for the heck .. I had a quick 'go' to see if what I'd said made good sense or result , and without cropping ALL the way of yours, this is what I came up with fairly quickly. DON'T think that this is shown as a better version .. but think of both as examples of the gist of what I was trying to say.

Now the post after mine in the list here of course shows yet another aspect - that for anyone looking to decide on a cam, out-of-cam shots ARE of interest. But whilst that is true , I'm not convinced that YOU gain much . I think YOU are the one that should use your own cam shots to put you into a better position for good shots that you will be pleased to show off...

This portrait has a huge amount of character. The expression is awesome, as is the relaxed pose. Very well done.

That said, the highlights are blown on the hat and the background is pretty ugly. So I thought I'd take a stab at how I would present it were it mine. Don't take this as criticism ... you got the shot, and it is a beauty.

I did a second one with the draganizer action, very crudely. This shot is an absolute classic for that treatment.

Wow - great processing job in the second example - has an awesome half surreal half 3D comic book look - if that even made sense - very cool though - worked awesome here IMO. A little more processing, a little more black and white - and it would fit right in the movie Sin City.
