To help, and a little bit extra

New 70-200 2.8 VR - awesome
New 50mm D 1.8 - awesome
New 18-70 DX kit - awesome

Used (ebay) 28-70 2.8 - awesome
Used (ebay) 20mm D 2.8 - awesome

all willingly connect to my D80 and provide great results.

Would I consider myself first time lucky? No. More to your point of those that aren't happy complain. Otherwise it would seem that the ratio of good vs. bad is 1:1000 ! :-)

I do not subscribe to the "please tell me I didn't get a dud lense" and post pics group. Meaning, I don't go looking for problems that don't exist. I am more interested in 'what does it do for me'!

Good luck with your survey, although I expect those that are statistical retentive may have problems with your non scientific survey (well, 9 times out of 10 for sure).

Cheers

Bryan

I know this is a lens survey but my 1st sb600 flash was defective and my 1st copy of my 85 1.8 was front focusing. Other than that my 18-70, 85 1.8 (2nd copy is a little soft wide open like most) and 80 200 2.8 are very good. I also had a 28 200 for a short time that was excellent.

Hi

All perfect copies. Most bought at BH

I also had the 50 1.2 ais for a few days before I sent it back because I changed my mind on it. It was perfect as well, in my judgement.

I've purchased 5 new Nikon primes:
50/1.4 twice
35/2
60/2.8
85/1.8

All were perfect.

I've purchased 2 new Nikon zooms:
18-200 VR
18-70

Both perfect.

I've bought 2 Nikon fixed aperture zoom lenses used:
17-55/2.8
70-200/2.8

Both perfect... and exceptional

I've bought 2 Nikon primes used:
TC-17e II (I'm not sure if this should be classified as a prime lens)
85/1.4

Both are perfect... and wonderful.

My experience is that Nikon delivers what they promise.

My Life in Two Words: Chromatic Aberration

New fast Nikon lenses I've purchased:

10.5mm fisheye
35mm f/2.0D
50mmf/1.8D
80-200mm f/2.8 (new 2-ring ED IF AF)

For the record I've also purchased a Tokina 12-24mm f/4, Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro, a used 300mm f/4 AFS

No bad samples, no back or front focus problem. Knock on wood.

Sean

Nikkor 50 1.8 D - Perfect
Nikkor 18-70 DX - Perfect
Tokina 100 2.8 Macro (used) - Perfect

I'm a happy man...

By the way Edward, I think I caught your "prime madness". I plan on writing a post on MY PERSONAL OPINION about "primes vs zooms", but I need to get some nice pictures first, don't I?

I'm even considering exchanging my 18-70 DX for a 20 2.8 or other similar wide prime... We'll see...

17-35 f/2.8 : perfectly fine
28-105 f/3.5-4.5D : very soft wide open -> unsatisfied
Tamron 90mm f/2.8 macro : perfectly fine
35mm f/2D : perfectly fine
50mm f/1.4D: perfectly fine
70-300mm VR : Still have to test this one due to bad weather...

24mm f/2.8 - tiny dot of something embedded between elements. I kept it anyway. It works fine.

50mm f/1.8 - no issues, very sharp

85mm f/1.8 - no issues, works great

300mm f/4 AF-S - this is the finest piece of glass I have ever owned
