I currently use a Crumpler Brian's Hot Tub and will be traveling via plane (in the US) soon. My current pack might squeeze in the plane (I'll be flying a smaller plane before I get into a bigger plane) but want to look at other options. I am considering the Pelican 1510 (with dividers) and it would be carrying the following gear:

Canon 1D Mark II N, Canon EF 17-40 f4L mm, Canon EF 100 mm f2.8 macro, Canon EF 300 mm f4L IS, Canon EF 50 mm f1.4, Canon 1.4 extender, Canon 580 EX, Canon 25 mm extension tube, Better Beamer, CF cards and extra 1D battery.

Will all this fit? Pros or cons on this choice? I like the price and if I ever get in a bind and HAVE to check it, I would feel better with the Pelican. I would also get a TSA lock too. Thanks for any advice or help. I have also considered Think Tank but they are not in my budget.

You won't need room for your CF cards in your peli case....they will be on your person.

Won't they??? :-D

I carry my (2) 5D's with my lenses mounted 24-70L, 70-200L. I also carry my (2) 580 EX Speedlites with stofens. This along with a couple extra batteries my light meter, and one flash bracket flash. I still have room for another lens either a 14mm 2.8 L or a 85mm 1.2 L The top of case has the photographers pockets that carries my extra CF cards and all the pocket items that camera bag carries. As I expand I am going to buy another 1510 case. They are very handy, light enough for me to carry if I have too, and protect the equipment.

My 1510 holds 5D + 24-105, 10D + 100-400, 70-200 f4, 17-40, 100 f2.8, 85 f1.8, 35 f2, 220 Ex, Novaflex focus rail, various filters, Hama collapsible lens hoods, release cable, and spare batteries. I could probably fit a larger flash instead of the focus rail. It doesn't hold the original Canon lens hoods. I might be able to get another filter in.

Hello,

I brought mine last year at B&H and flew back to France with it. I was able to take it on-board with me and that was great ! I carry many lenses like "bigma", 70-200L ISf/2.8, 300L IS f/4 (big lenses) and my 1DmkII body with a smaller lens mounted. It's one of the smarter buy that i've done !!!
I highly recommand it to anyone travelling with expansive photo gear by plane.

I also use it to store my gear at home away for "child's reach" ;-) and let's me get to my photo location with more gear than i would carry in my bag. You can never know if you won't need that extra lens unless you have it handy.

An besides that can make for a chair in crowded airport lobbies/coridors LOL...

Cheers,

i'm interested in a lowepro omni trekker extreme & trekker extreme (peli 1550).

to me this combo doesn't seem high enough for a 1D2N with lens fitted, some you guys manage in a 1510.

could you post internal photos with gear in pace such that we might see how it's laid out?

-a fair bit of gear, a reasonable idea.

at that time a very experienced air traveler stated that it depends on what you mean by small plane. He found that it simply did not fit some small "commuter" tye aircraft and it had to be checked. He did not say which "small planes" he had to check the 1510 thru for...but he was pretty emphatic about the problem.

The TSA locks are a joke, as they are no assurance of security. They just tell you if one of the 1000s of baggage handlers, legitimate or otherwise, with TSA keys opened the case, or not. The same situation existed years ago with key lockable Samsonite and American Tourister luggage...there was only one key for all of each brand. That's why all the luggage started having rotary dial combination locks. The TSA locks are a reversion, not progress.

Baggage theft is a real problem, and a purpose built camera case is essentially an advertisement for its contents.

Stuff happens...

Here ya go.

Of course I used the 5d 50mm/flash to take the picture so they are not shown. The flash usually sits on top of the 1D where I have the label. The extra battery for the 1D and AA's are under the 24-70 and 70-200 lens. I normally have these two lenses wrapped in a cloth but removed them so you could see the lenses.

consider checking this case with a TSA lock or any kind of lock on it. I did have to have it placed in the baggage hold of a very small (20 seater) plane once. But I stood there at the foot of the stairs until I saw the handler put it in the plane and I was first off waiting for it before the handlers at the other end even made it to the plane.

Hi Phill,

Don't you find that these cases (am all other photo equipment) are a complete rip of in Europe!

It seems that anything half pro justifies quadruple prices! Scandal I think. I buy all my gear in the US (including software) and carry it over - in my pelicase naturally!

Regards,

JS

Typically what I do is:

1) remove all the padding from the pelicase (put it all in the check in bag)
2) but all my gear in decent but not too big a camera bag (billingham)

3) If I were to be asked to check in my pelicase, I can remove the billingham for hand carry and check in pelicase without valueables.

I never had to resort to step 3 and so far I have had the maximum protection from the pelicase, the seat it the airport and with a proper padlock and security cable, maximum security in the Hotel rooms.

Works great for me.

Does the top of a 1D N protrude above the dividers? In most pictures I have seen, it looks like the top sticks out above the dividers. Is it a tight fit? I really appreciate all the responses to my question and it looks like I can't go wrong with a Pelican case.

Bennett

It's a very tight fit if you stand it up in the case. Look at my photo above and you'll see that I lay it flat with no lens. Then there's room on top of it for the flash and battery pack. It will close though with the camera standing up but it seems too tight for my comfort.

The short answer is NO if your going to begin your trip in one of Commuter flights with under 70 seats. Best Bet for the protection of your expensive stuff is carry the Camera and the your "L" lens ina soft bag that you can hold on your lap or place under the front seat for take-off. The 1510 will NOT fit into the the overhead compartment of the comuter jet. They'll take the case from you and put it under the aircraft, and you will sweat for every one of the 60-90 minutes of that flight...

I travel with usually three cameras, and a number of "L" lenses, probably over $20,000 in replacement value; so in these situations I give my wife a soft bag and some of the equipment, I carry some of the quipment in soft cases, putting the lenses in the Canon Gray bags which I bought spares of for $30/copy, perhaps carry one camera on my sholder strap with an "L" lens on it, and check he 1510 with the stuff you can afford to loose, stuffed with underware and sox, things you can affort to loose, into the compartmentalized slots . When you get to the destination, repak for the work at hand. I actually use Tamrac's air-travel roller cases, they make two sizes, got the smallest version, which work in the larger A300 of B757's but not the commuter airlines.

I have traveled all over the planet and it is very frightening when an airline official takes your $20,000 equipment kit,,, as it is NOT insured !!!
and if I ever get in a bind and HAVE to check it, I would feel
