The updated S3 better be a good one

who will pick up an SP-550. It just means that one more will be available for those of us who wear glasses, but for who the LCD scenario doesn't make a big difference. Goodie, goodie, goodie...one more that is available and not taken! :-)

Have a great day!

The S3 is f2.7 at 6mm, f3.2 at 8mm, and f3.5 from 15mm-72mm. All
variable-f-stop zoom lenses I've had for SLRs are somewhat similar
(slow constant f-stop for a good portion of the long end of the
zoom range). I have no reason to believe the Oly is any different.
The Olympus Zuiko 50-200/2,8-3,5 for example is still F2,8 at 90mm,
F3,1 at 150mm and only reaches 3,5 at 200mm, it is below F3,5 if
you are not at 200mm (Oly DSLRs show aperture value for wide open
at 0,1 stops)

I do not know about the lens of the P-550.

Which upgradde to the S3 are you talking about. I haven't read of onee. I would not buy the new Olympus just because of a long zoom lens.

And the lack of auto bracketing, exposure is ridiculous and in many
of the point and shoot Canon cams. I use auto bracketing A Lot! A
deal breaker for me if not included. I've never seen or owned an
Olympus camera without it.
After having checked it just to see that it worked, I have NEVER used auto bracketing. If I have a situation where the camera is underexposing the main subject (e.g., typical backlighting situation) then I increase the exposure appropriately. If the camera seems to be overexposing, with important highlights being blown, then I will make exposure correction in the opposite direction. Most of the time, the exposure is correct. When it's off I can tell if it's over or under, and I don't find it necessary to take an extra shot with exposure changed in a direction that I know will make the problem worse. If it's an underexposure problem, I would rather take two or three extra shots to compensate for it, going to, let's say +1/3, +2/3, and +1 than having the camera do +2/3 and -2/3, when I know that -2/3 is just going to make the problem worse.

As I said, different strokes...

It is supposedly 'in the works' - You would think that Canon would have to come back with something to counter the new Olympus. Most people on the forums are going by the old release dates/months and saying it will probably be announced in Feb. this year. It's really speculation and so are the specs and even the name (S4IS or S5IS?) ... probably S5IS if it happens (the number 4 has a negative meaning to some so Canon may jump to S5IS) You should see the wish lists people have for the S3IS upgrade!

I only have a few: keep the swivel screen (nice for protection and tight angles) but increase the resolution, keep the video with stereo sound and improve it with more than 1GB limit, improve the focus capabilities, wider lens and lastly the current ISO800 is not bad but how about a usable 1600 on the new model as well.
