Let's have an XTi "green box" auto mode challenge. Any lens and flash allowed, only requirement is that the photo's been taken with the XTi in "green box" full auto dial setting.

Whatya think?

i actually think it's a good idea for a challenge, because it forces you to set up your shots to get the camera to agree with you. true you could get a better shot most of the times if you tell the camera what you want, but this would be interesting to see how talented photographers change their thinking based on the rules of the challenge. i like it, however, i don't have any full-auto pics hosted anywhere right now so i can't contribute!

Great idea! I'd participate, but under one stipulation... there should be no post processing. It should be straight "out of the box" green box. I know most of us don't take photos in full auto mode, there's nothing stopping us from taking 5 minutes to do so now.

When taken in "P" mode (WTH is P mode?)

yes the box is green...but the camera can't seem to figure out how to use a flash that is obstructed by a hood lol.

Though I'm not sure why anyone would use either...they are both bizare as heck.

AV mode or M mode please.

I'm sorry I can't contribute yet, due to the lack of a 400D/XTi!

This thread is not the challenge, so don't submit. I realize some yucksters won't be able to resist submitting their ideas of a joke. You'd think they have enough underexposure threads to have fun with.

Rules are still being discussed. So don't submit yet. If we do it, let's start a new official challenge thread.

I considered this idea when I made the original post. However, I decided against that as a rule, mainly because none of the other challenges have this stipulation. If you can take a good photo and want to PP it to make it better, so what. Images will certainly want/need to be resized for the web. I think the only real stipulation we'll have to require is that original EXIF not be stripped or modified.

What do others think?

Well, it's your idea so go with your gut. Personally, I don't think you get the true essence of green box if you add post processing.

Good catch Olga. I'm pretty sure it was a joke. Perhaps people should be warned about being banned from the challenge if they submit fradulent entries. ;)

Of course, the challenge will be: XTi/400D "green box" full auto. Meaning, you must use a 400D/XTi in the "green box" full auto setting.

Well, I think it should be discussed. There are groups on Flickr, for example, like "No Photoshop here" for photos that haven't been PP'd. I think it's just to hard to verify. If you're going to allowed resized photos, then there's really no way to tell if there's also been brighntness/contrast, saturation, sharpening, etc. We'd have to either have access to originals or only allow originals to be submitted to be sure.

I got the Rebel to use the advanced modes and customized settings and picture styles. Why not make the contest use Av,Tv,M,P modes?

The Rebel is a starter camera for many. Why not get the new users thinking out of the [green] box?

whats the dead line?
Suggest one. Let's just discuss the rules for one more day or so and then we (I) can start a new thread for the first official challenge with rules and deadline spelled out.

I think one week from the start of the challenge? What do you think?

I think that's already covered by the other challenges in here.

Since this forum is for the Canon 300/350 and 400 why not include all of those camera since they all (never used yet on my XT) have a green box?

By the way I really did laugh out loud when I saw the first "dark" entry.
