Hello....Hello
I'm wondering why the raw image on my FZ50 is grainier and noisier
than the low res. jpeg that acompanies it. In raw mode, i set it to
max. noise reduction and 0 sharpness and its still grainier than
the low. res jpeg.

This is normal....RAW files have nothing done to them in
camera...whereas the jpg's are noise reduced (NR
low,etc).....along with how you have set the Contrast, Stauration
and sharpness...
Just remember that RAW literally means raw...nothing done to
it...so it follows that it has to be noisier than Jpg's

GOOGLE RAW and you will fine lots of explanations...good luk
Big thanks for that Rik. That answers an unanswered question from my most recent post
RAW is there to give you a totally uprocessed image to work with by using your PC and some software (presumably SilkyPix) to control all aspects of the processing. More noise is a perfectly normal feature of RAW. Maybe you don't need to be shooting in RAW at this stage of your career? BTW the Venus III processing engine in your FZ50 is notorious for over-processing, so I would suggest turning down the noise reduction to 'low' and the other settings to no higher than STD when you shoot JPG's. High Noise Reduction setting is pretty much a sad waste on this camera.Hello

This isn't an answer, but an aside. The accompanying jpeg is not low resolution. It's full resolution, and the EXIF info will tell you how many pixels long & wide it is. It has all the processing applied that you have set for jpegs (contrast, sharpness, etc). It's just using Standard compression rather than Fine compression. Quite frequently I find I like the jpeg better than what I'm able to do with the RAW. (Or, if you like parts of each, you could use Layers to combine them in post-processing, since they line up with each other exactly.)I'm wondering why the raw image on my FZ50 is grainier and noisier
