So, I posted a thread the other day on here and another forum about an advanced Point and Shoot. I now have it narrowed down to the G7 and the S3 IS. I am wanted something with more manual controls and functions than a standard point and shoot.

Again, I shoot mainly outside (90%), some action, mostly nature, fishing, my dogs, my trucks when off-roading and trail riding, etc... every now and then I will take pictures of my dogs indoors. I know I would love having the 12x zoom, but I also love the build quality of the G7. My main concern as well is overall image quality... what would you guys recommend? THanks again!

The G7 will offer slightly better image quality, mainly because of the resolution. But the S3 is a very, very capable camera, with a good lens, great features (just the swivel screen is the deal maker for me). So I think yuo should not worry about the image quality, both cameras will serve you very well. Decide which features are more important, and go that way.

I did own both the S3 and G7 (sold the S3) and the IQ will be better on the G7 but not by much, you will be able to crop more or do bigger print with the G7. The CA is very present on the S3 and virtually not there on the G7. The lens looks more constant on the G7, not surprising considering the difference of zoom.

In the end, it all depends on what you want to shoot and the size of camera your willing to carry around, to me the S3 was just a littl bit too big.

here's a stupid question... what's CA?

It is looking more and more like the S3 IS is that way to go... but the CA... this is new to me, but then again, I am a noob to this forum... thanks again for all the help guys! hopefully in the near future I can post pics on here with what I decided on and stop bugging you all with dumb questions! ;)

S3 jas been out for a year now and some dealers have already removed them from display to be replaced with whatever Canon is going to replace them with. I'm trying to decide between the G7, A710, A640, and did include the S3 until I heard the blog about a new model replacing it. I have a 710 for a week now but keep thinking theres better ones around that I haven't been told about. Help please.

I wonder when the replacement for the S3 will be out and how much it will cost.. probably $500 I am guessing... that will probably be a good way to go I think... but we'll see...

Thanks again for all the help!

Tough choice.

I just picked the G7 or the S3, but I wanted a camera I could have with me all of the time. So in the end it came down to what I could easily carry in my briefcase and also I hate using an LCD or EVF.

With that said, I did compare some shots from the G& with those from an S3. The G7 has a little better picture, but the S3 has the zoom range.
