I am former PC user-just got my IMAC today and am clueless over basic operations. I want to install Studio Artist . You guys said stupid questions are welcome, so here is one.

I put in the CD and a CD icon is now on the screen. Unlike the PC, there appears to be no "autoinstallation"
The install documentation states:
"Copy the entire Studio Artist 3.5 from the CD to your hard drive.
You can do this by dragging the folder in the Macintosh finder to your

computer hard drive. This will copy the application and all it files toyour hard drive"

Question: Does this mean that I just drag the program CD icon onto the icon Macintosh HD ? This will auomatically install the program ?

Yes, but better authored Mac installation routines will tell to to drag the icon to the Applications folder. Some of them will just present you with the specific icon and a shortcut (Mac term:alias) to the Applications folder.

Anyway, just drag the thing to the Applications folder. Then life will be good. And do check out new to Mac tutorials at Apple's site and references in this forum.

Open your application folder and drag the icon from the new software into the applications folder. If you have trouble locating the application folder, click on the magnifying glass in upper right corner (spotlight search) and type in application folder. There are other ways to access it but this is probably the easiest to explain. After you drag the new application icon into the application folder you can also drag any of the icons from the download that are left on the desktop into the trash. Good luck and enjoy your new mac!

double click the cd icon

a finder window will open

click and drag the icon of your software to your applications folder or onto the desktop (you can drag to the desktop first and then to your applications folder)

a dialogie box apperas saying copying "whatever the files are" to the desktop/or wherever you dragged them to

once finished copying double click the applicatiion icon to run

most applications are self contained allowing drag and drop installation however some apps like photoshop have auto installers like you remember from windoze

You can also press Command+Shift+A in the finder to open the applications folder.

This worked perfectly. Thank you- I am making progress.

If you have the possibility of getting the book "OS X: The Missing Manual by David Pogue, do so. It is a great learning tool. I think one of the first things you should do is get used to the Finder (which is just a program that runs all the time, so you don't have to think about it) and how it organizes your files. Unlike Windows, OS X mounts an image of your hard drive, CD, DVD, external drives, whatever as an ICON on your desktop. If you double click the ICON it opens up into another "finder" window. Within the finder windows you can choose how you browse the window. At the top of the window there are three icons for "Icon View", "List View", and "Column View". Those are sort of self explanatory, but usually we just leave the column view on because it is so much easier (certainly easier than Windows Explorer). You should get used to the Mac rational behind Folders (also smart folders, and automatic opening or spring loaded folders). Then realise that you can customize all this and build your hierarchy any way you want. Very flexible.

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}
