Here's a very rough computer translation!

Almost simultaneously with the presentation of the new Foveon-X3-Sensor-Technology, this new Nikon COOLPIX model has finally made it.

4/3 " sensor with 3.4MP - no wechseloptik

Here in the DS-9, a X3-Sensor becomes necessary, as without these new optics - the Nikon lens would have been too large and could not have been made to adapt. It is however equipped with an extremely good focal length - 7 - 70mm with a maximum aperture of f. 2,8 which provides all that we had hoped for. The 35mm equivalent is 28 - 280mm. A 17mm (equivalent) wide-angle ED glass lens is in preparation.

HP Sucher - TTL Bitztechnik

An optical HP mechanism, which works with a LCD mirror, offers an excellent light entry path, leaving the LCD crystals " open " for maximum light entry without handicap on the X3-Sensor. This method of construction avoids a complex light path with its high mechanical and space requirement.

Finally, also successfully incorporated, the TTL metering well-known of the SLR models is fully integrates for SB flashguns..

Power & panorama

The battery supply NT-Akkus is re-introduced, giving a long life, and can in few minutes be recharged. The extra battery grip has a portrait format shutter release and can be equipped with a panorama base. This turns the camera around the longitudinal axis, while the optics can scan the scene on a level base on a perfect plane. After the 360°-Schwenk a panorama file is provided automatically.

After unconfirmed information the camera will be introduced in few days on the PMA in Orlando, and will be available at the beginning of calendar week 14.

Dr. Trout!

From what I can make of the Babelfish translation, that is exactly what you are seeing. looks like it's a prism/mirror setup!! 10x zoom, REAL viewfinder X3 sensor too!ng. Dang! I'm gonna HAVE to have one!

This looks pretty interesting. From a marketing point of view, why/how can
you introduce a new camera that > possibly
one that started shipping 2 months ago, without cannibalizing the sales of
the previous camera(CP5000). If this is the case, there are going to be
an awful lot of CP5000 owners who are going to be PO'd, me for one....

On another note, I don't see a hot shoe on this supposed CP999...

Clearly a fake.

The vertical grip taken from the CP5000

Everything else I'm not sure... It's hard to tell if you guys are joking or not when you talk about these things :)

Damn! Don't even have time to flip through the CP5000 manual yet. How much is this new baby?

Hard to imagine any company dumb enough to short circuit their high-end customers (those pro-sumers like me) who just bought the CP 5000 by introducing a camera that is superior to the 5000 after only two months. If this is the case, I'll bet MANY Nikon fans will decide they've had quite enough of this arrogance.

I can see the new camera being a solid mid-level model, or a smaller 3.4MP one. Value propositon could be smaller physical size, or lower price than existing models, but the quality one HAS to remain with the 5000. Guess we'll know soon enough.
--CP 5000

While I have a feeling most agree with you (including Nikon's marketing people) I disagree. If there is an advancement that happens 2 months later, don't sit on it for over a year before bringing it to market for fear of hurting sales of your other models. If companies sit on new advancements for longer period of times then that may slow down the evolution of the digital camera, which is bad. :-)

This may be an exageration but every year computers get twice as fast and better, so why shouldn't the same be true with digital cameras? If you buy a computer, 2 months later there are 200+ mhz faster ones, 2 months after that 400+mhz, etc. ...

Just my two cents, as I would rather skip over models (buy every two years if need be) and get better technology faster.

The 3.4M pixel of the new CP Blue are color pixels and CP5000 has 5M color blind pixels.

You tell me which you would prefer.

I am pissed but what can I say. I paid $1,400 for a 25Mhz 486 chip when it first came out. $600 for 64Meg DRAM memory. But as my friend said, it helped me in my work at that time, why should I fell bad.

The point is: if you "need" the damn thing, buy it. If you just "want" the damn thing, you have to prepare for buyer's remorse because the better and cheaper of the same thing just around the corner.

Well, I just want a digicam so I suffered. I thought I just told my wife the other day after I bought the CP5K that I would not buy another digitcam for a long while since I have bought 7 digicams from my first Fujifilm FinePix 470. I guess somehow I just need to find good ways to eat "words" or learn how to live in a dog house.

Alan-G

I have an olympus C2100UZ - 2.1 mp -with a 7mm to 70mm - 10X optical zoom, which is equal to a 38mm to 380mm lens on a 35mm camera.

Wouldn't this be the same on the Nikon ?

I have a Nikon 990, but use the Olympus almost exclusively, because of the zoom range, but miss the swivel action of the 990.

Now it looks like I can have both; with 3mp.

For those of you that haven't used a 10x zoom, I guarantee you'll love it.

Cant wait.

Thanks for the info.

This can't be for real. As much as I want that German translation to be true, a 999 with 10x zoom and the X3 technology, there just is no way. A 10x zoom on an internally focussing lens in the 9xx body seems impossible because of size limits. Also, the X3 technology is first going to be seen in a $3,000 slr camera, not a coolpix (per the story on this site)

So rest easy, you may not be lured to part with your 5000 just yet.

Yes, it is a mirage. But it really says what people want.
I would prefer CP5K body with a f/1.8 ~ 2.0 lens using X3 image chip.
Initial market price $1,200 would be reasonable.

Hi Richard,

brilliant job, thanks for translation.
And of course - it is a fake - sorry - but I had to ;-)

Maybe Nikon people are looking and talking about the wishes of their customers to bring again a really great camera that can be purchased not only by press agencies. As a Nikon user since more than 20 years I really would like to get such a tool - made for photographers who know how to work - not toys like most of the pixel grabber out there.
