"Your house is about to be photographed"

Both Google and Microsoft are doing this already.

However, maybe the Canadian company is under contract to Google or Microsoft?

BTW, both companies have contracted fleets of small planes which fly at 2000 feet or so an take very high resolution pictures. The planes have 5 cameras that shoot left, right, forward, and backwards angles, plus straight down. We had some at our airport and they have a strange exhaust extension that plumbs the exhaust back behind the camera port.

I kid you not. It was a long time ago, but it really happened.

His house and the houses on either side of his were selected to appear in an ad for some product or another. He signed the release form and got paid for letting the ad agency use his property. Unknown to the agency and the advertiser, on the day of the photo shoot he parted some front curtains slightly and stood naked between them, revealing only the very center of his body from head to about his knees.

The strangest thing is that no one noticed (the pic showed the whole row of houses; his image in the shot was very, very small) until the ad got to the client for final approval. The ad agency didn't get fired, but they came pretty close to losing the account....

I didn't write it. It's a quote from the legal department of the
American Society of Media Photographers.
You replied with text to the OP's message and now you say you didnt write it ?
If you aren't familiar with the ASMP, here's a synopsis of what
they're about:
So? And quoting someone else in a wrong context doesnt make it right.

If this is true, those who photograph all the houses around are going to have a hell of a job. Imagine all those thousands and thousands of images occupying imense amount of data storage. Then, when they finish their job, they would have to start from square one... After all, houses are demolished, painted, or completely changed.

This is absolute nonsense. Throughout history, there was never a need to have an image of every single house around - and humanity survived! This is incredible!!!

Now, seriously, I believe that homes should only be photographed if there is something very special about them, otherwise, it is a waste of time having to archive them all.

I have no problem with people photographing my house or anything else they can see with their own two eyes while out walking - even though I may not understand or agree with what they want the picture for - any other take on this leads to a situation we just don't want.

Consider what would happen if it became illegal to photograph things like a house as seen from a public place... people would jump on that precedent and start banning photographing virtually everything and you might as well sell your camera gear.

...for Internet info pages, like phone directories where you can get the street address to go with a phone number, say to a store you're looking for. They have started added pictures of the house/store fronts so you can get a view of your destination before going there. It seems this is a quite well received function.

It distresses me that 49 people, now 50 including myself, would bother with this sort of silly handwringing nonsense on a paranoia group of extreme psycho cases, much less on dpreview.

If people keep posting foolishness like this, obviously trolling for fun, and the rest of us are crazy enough to respond this wonderful group is headed for trouble.

Let's hope the owners find this and delete soon.

Time we all got a life.

This story made the news here in Canada about 10 years ago... it must have been a slow news day for it to get dragged up again.

it's true (also) that the pictures will be used on the internet (for the money of course)... pretty much like google, yahoo, msn does.

nobody says much about it. Including our associations.

and they do this:

take copyrighted pictures
copy everything into their folders
modify everything, resizing even if the owner said not to do so

show them up on their pages (they did the design, not the owner of the copyright) and it may be an improper display (not authorized)

and with THAT they promote their own business (again for the money, their money, our material)
all illegal.. isn't it?

that's true too.

P.S.: now I post small thumbnails, good just about enough to see the shot: now, resize THAT! LOL

Problem is that we can't stop the Internet and the benefits of a web presence (including the search engines) are or supposed to be a good thing for us.. that's why we don't say anything (yet)

Cameras are everywhere these days.

What is one more image going to mean in the rising tide of images we are already up to our collective nose in?

But...more importantly...I'm not sure I fully understand what you
wrote. Did they photography property they weren't representing? If
so, why would they do such a thing? Why would they shoot every
residential property in Canada if they were only representing a
handful of those properties?
Most REALTORs are quite aware of the financial implications of their actions, I imagine. They think thay can make a buck doing it.

It must cost less to shoot all the homes in a street at one time, rather than have to visit 50% of them one-at-a-time later. They could probably sell the images to their competitors if they failed to get the listing themselves.
