Availability of Canon S900 printer

Can't believe it but I inquired at Canon about the S900 and this is the exact reply I received. I was hoping they would be in the stores sometime this month. I think someone posted here that had a brother working at Canon and he had said they would be in the stores this month. If you read this message maybe you can clear this up some without revealing anything that is not supposed to be made public yet.

Funny how US based Amazon knows more than the US based Canon people do. If you go to this link you can pre-order. Amazon says the printer will be available March 7th. We'll see who is lying; Amazon or Canon. :)

I have done the pre-order thru Amazon and they never get released when they say. I think it is just a ploy to get you interested.

Tonight, 2/9/02, alongside the S800 price sticker on the shelf was the S900 sticker. I grabbed a salesman and he/we looked on the store stock computer and it said "in stock 2/11/02".

The bad news: He didn't know anything about the S9000 except he said they would not carry them because of price.??? Hopefully that is just opinion.

Even if they don't release it "on time" at least they are acknowledging the printer exists. Canon won't even admit they know about the printer.

I have seen this before: Years ago I was ordering an HP laser printer. I had heard there was a new model coming out so I called the company. They said they had NO information on any new models coming out, and that the one I wanted to buy was still the "best". Well, I ordered it, and literally two days later I saw the new printer in a store....mine was instantly old technology.

I think it is the manufacture's way of making sure the stock gets cleared out.

I'm not sure exactly which department the reply you got was from, but if you call 1800okcanon and ask to speak to someone in the sales department (the operator will transfer you) they will give you info on it - you can even pre-order from them.

Like another post, I too saw the Best Buy price/info tags at my local store about 2 weeks ago. They had a tag for the S820 for $299 (NOT the 820D, I believe the S820 is like the former S800, maybe with some upgrades) and the S900 for $399.

BestBuy person told me that they print out those tags to help the display people get ready for new products coming in...they didn't have an exact date for me but said that once the tags are there it usually take 3 weeks or so until the product arrives.

Just an additional note: ask for the sales department, not pre-sales department. They are not the same department. Pre-sales people told me the S900 didn't exist.....oooookay.....I told them that I spoke with someone to place a pre-order on the S900 and she denied that that was possible....uh-huh...

As of today (2/12/02) I was told that the 820, 820D and 900 is slated to be out and available at the end of February/beginning of March.

But then I'm in Europe.

Usually new devices are always available in the States first. Looks like it's different this time! ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)

I must say it works really great and FAST!!!

But then I was only used to the output of a six year old HP Deskjet 850C. That printer generated pictures on which I could walk from one pixel to the other :-)

I bet it is FAST. I can't wait! I have a pre-order at Amazon right now.

Only bad part is I'll have to wait till March 21st to get my printer(if they deliver on time). :( Wish I was European...

Don't which to be a European too much... we usually pay a lot more for the same stuff than the Americans do :-(

The (printed version) of the B&H catalog I received in the mail yesterday listed the S900 at $399.- and the S9000 at $499.-.
I didn't call and ask about availability.--Ralf
