Hi all,

Photoshop drives me crazy as it always modifies EXIF while saving. It removes some parts and adds Software - Adobe Photoshop ....
Is there a way how to keep the EXIF part intact when working with Photoshop?

Thank you in advance

With a tool like EXIFer you can save the exif data, then add it back to the photo after working on it in Photoshop. I have only noticed that Photoshop adds that the photo has been worked on in photoshop, everything else stays the same I thought, but I may be wrong, but EXIFer lets you save the exif data and restore it.

At what stage is it removing your EXIF data?

Are you using the "Save for Web" option?

Well that's an odd problem because I've never seen it before. Photoshop does add to some EXIF fields, but I've not seen the extended rewriting of data fields as you describe.

I know when ever I work on a photo in photoshop, the only thing changed is the software used was Photoshop CS2, everything else is the same for me. Maybe there is a setting in options or preferences that got changed where your EXIF data is getting changed?

Photoshop always has simply discarded the proprietary information inside the maker notes of the EXIF. This type of information is written by many models of digital cameras, and can contain some very interesting stuff.

Can you provide examples and a link where I can get more info on this?
You can read up on maker note information at Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exif#MakerNote_Information

An example of makernote information found in digital camera images may be found earlier in this thread where the original poster lists the meta information lost when his images are edited by Photoshop. All of the information listed is from the maker notes:

I hope this helps. If you have any more specific questions I would be happy to answer them.

I hadn't heard that before... and was interested in getting more
information about this.
Hi Joe,

I don't have any really good references on this, although you can read the section "A short rant about TIFF inadequacies" on this page:

http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/canon_raw.html

Basically, due to inadequacies in the EXIF/TIFF format, there is no proper way to preserve unknown information when the image is rewritten. Photoshop takes the hard line and simply deletes it. Other utilities do their best to preserve it, but all run the risk of corrupting this information.

Also read the EXIF/TIFF and EXIF Maker Notes commentaries here:

http://owl.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/commentary.html

This may help explain the origin of the problem.

For a very long time now, Photoshop (each version I use...now CS6) changes the EXIF info from the original digital shot from the correct camera, date, time, exposure info, etc....to December 18th, 2010, Nikon D300, etc....

No matter what I've done this keeps happening. If I go to File Info and correct the date of the shot...this isn't saved when I re-check the file.

I don't want another program to fix this....I want Photoshop to stop messing it up.

Is that possible?
