Someone tell me I'm not nuts!

I just took 3 photos.......
1st in SHQ mode
2nd in HQ mode
3rd in SQ mode

When the pics were read in Camedia it showed this in properties detail:
1st in SHQ mode.......HQ 1600x1200 793k
2nd in HQ mode........SQ 1600x1200 363k
3rd in SQ mode.........HQ 1280x960 737k

Have I totally lost all reasoning? When I shoot in HQ I'm actually shooting in SQ mode?

Maybe it's late but it seems if I shoot in HQ that's what I should be reading

Have you checked the COMPRESSION settings for each mode....

I really need some input here. I set the camera to shoot in HQ and when I view the photos on the computer it shows they were shot in SQ. Same with SHQ.....shows taken in HQ mode.

Is SQ Sequence mode on your camera?

If so the settings are in the mode setup screen.

1280 x 960 may be the highest possible setting in that mode.

If you are going by EXIF data I have noticed myself that sometimes the EXIF data seems to say something other than what I thought it should. The file sizes and other considerations indicate on thing and the EXIF data says another. I never dug into it as the end result was all I was interrested in and that didnt seem to be a problem.

There are menu items, I believe, that specify image sizes for the various
modes.

Your results look correct. It is obvious that you have SQ mode set to HQ 1280x960, which will give you the file size you list. If you want smaller file sizes in SQ mode, try changeing the mode used for SQ photos.

If you have more question, read your manual about how to change settings for SQ mode. I think it even lists all the file sizes for all the SQ modes somewhere in the manual, but maybe I saw that here somewhere.

On page 63 of my US manual, it lists the approximate number of photos in each mode, but not the file sizes. You'll have to do some math to figure out the approximate file sizes in the different modes.

It is true that a file taken in SQ with a setting of "HQ-compression 1280x960" will be larger than a file taken in HQ (which is really "Normal-compression 1600x1200"), and smaller than SHQ (which is really "HQ-compression 1600x1200").

I am not sure if I am being clear on what I am saying. I just looked through photos on my hard drive that I took with my C2020. I found pictures that were taken in SHQ mode. I knew this because in the property details the Quality listed is SHQ. I am not getting that information on my 2100. When I take the photo in SHQ it is showing HQ in the details.

It is my understanding I can't change compression in HQ mode, correct? So, when I take a picture in HQ why does the quality show up as SQ?

Please bear with me on this one...comprehension is not one of my strong suites.

SHQ uses HQ (High Quality) compression

HQ uses SQ (Standard Quality) compression

SQ uses whatever you have is set at, which could be either HQ or SQ compression, and can be one of 3 resolutions.
