Hello,

Here is my first pic taken with my new camera. I used 55-200 lens. I want to learn form you how to improve my photos. Feel free posting your suggestions, corrections, etc.

I noticed that it's not very sharp over the stones...:-(

Manual mode 1/320 f 7.1 and a bit of PP..

Thanks in advance

From what I see compared to what I usually see it is a great shot with nice sharpness. And true to form Nikon shows better detail than most in the shadow of the rock.

Where? Not that you can actually judge sharpness (of the lens) from a downsized JPEG.

As for the shot itself - what was it that captured YOUR eye in the scene?

My 'mental workflow' usually happens like this:

1. Wow! Beautifuf (stricking/ugly/amazing/funny etc.)
2. Wait a sec... what IS IT that made me think that?

3. Aha! It's the ..... (colour, pattern, face expression, combination of this and that, unusual light etc.)
4. Now, what's the best way to convey the stuff listed in 3?
5. Compose
6. Shoot.

Obviously all this happens in a second or so. The idea is to think WHAT in the scene makes you want to shoot it and what's the best way to maximise the impact.

Thanks for your comments Alex, i take note of your "mental workflow".

I was testing with the 55-200, i wanted to capture the lights and shadows of the rock and the little waves over the little rocks. I was a little far form there. I shooted in JPEG normal at 130 mm, and in 100% size i notice a bit unfocus or not sharp in the light zone of rocks. Perhaps i focused into the water or my eye is confusing me, by the way, the pics seems much better downsized than in his original size.

Regards.

Welcome! :)

Point the camera at an object - it will capture it :) The trick is to find the best way to 'isolate' that special something that captured your eye. So ideally, it would work something like this:

1. Wow, what a beautiful scene!

2. Hmm... it seems that it's because of an interesting combination of deep shadows on textured rocks and smooth light waves

3. I need to be close there and use a fairly large f-number (to capture both). Polariser would be nice... The contrast is too high, so what do I do about it (sacrifise the shadows, blow the waves, use fill flash...)

I personally would look at the scene and told myself: "Yeah... such a nice scene, pity I can't really capture its beauty - the DR is too high and I can't get closer... Always the next time!" Happens a lot to me :( But there's always next time! :)
