In late March, I have two days (one night) for a photo trip traveling from Laguna Beach to San Diego and would like to explore the CA desert. I realize this limits the options and probably excludes Death valley, being too far out of the way. I was thinking of Mojave National Preserve, Joshua Tree NP or Anza Borrego DSP. I am interested mainly in landscape photos. Any recommendations from the desert foxes? Thanks,
Andreas

To be truthful... you probably don't have enough time... Laguna - San Deigo trek would probably be better served imaging the seascape/coastline. To get to the desert vista areas of Joshua Tree/Anza et al would be a one day affair in and of itself.

From Laguna to Joshua Tree/Yucca Valley to San Diego is a 300 mile trek and 6-hours driving alone...

Use a mapping program and plug in the desired places to see just how much time it takes to travel from the coast to the desert areas and back to San Diego... Best to choose one desired vista from the many, many opportunities available...

Check out http://www.desertusa.com . You'll find information about the wildflower season in the spring with updates during the bloom. It covers more than just the California deserts and there is a lot to look at.

If you plan on hiking search around on http://www.sdreader.com/ed/roam/ . Jerry Schad, who's information is on this link has an excellent book with descriptions for San Diego and other areas.

Depending the type of vehicle you have you can go off road in some areas. Hiking will get you to others. What I like most about the Anza Borego is just turning a corner will be a completely different looking area.

You will always find something out here to photograph if you look. Might not be what you intended.

Anza Borrego would be the most convenient to San Diego. I tend to hit Joshua Tree and some of the other areas in the Mojave desert so haven't driven in to Anza Borrego from these routes - although family members use portions (from Julian on) for spring flower trips, etc. From Laguna, I'd suggest south along the coast and then go inland on the 78, through Escondido, past the San Diego Wild Animal Park, through Ramona and Julian and down the Banner Grade. Family members use the 76 and 79 but they are coming from other areas and those would be less convenient.

These aren't really fast roads east of Escondido, so you would be spending some time on the driving but the area should be pretty pleasant and greened up during the time you are talking about.

Since I don't frequent Anza Borrego, I'll leave it to others or the sources offered as to whether you would want to return via Julian or go south to I-8 and then west to San Diego.

But Joshua Tree and especially Death Valley would be completely out of the way.

I would certainly start trying to make reservations now if you want to overnight as there aren't a lot of options if not considering camping.

I love Anza Borrego. There are tons of photo ops here.

I enjoy staying at Agua Caliente state park. There are hot mineral pools to relax in after hiking.

The visitors center in Borrego springs will supply you with good maps and ideas. Fonts point, fish creek and the badlands are a few great photo op spots. It's helps to have 4 wheel drive to get to some of the better areas

Carry the 10 essentials.

Thank you everybody for your advice and my compliments on your great pictures!

I believe we will spend time at Anza Borrrego instead of sitting in the car for hours. The trip will be in late March and hopefully we'll be lucky with the wildflowers.
