RAW + Basic - writing 2 JPGs

I've just starting looking at RAW, and have the following problem. If I choose RAW (only), the camera (D50) writes a "NEF" file, around 5 Mb. If, however, I choose "RAW + BASIC", it writes 2 small JPGs (about 650 Kb), and no "NEF" file. What am I doing wrong? Or is it a fairly serious problem with the camera?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Dave.

I am assuming that after you download pictures to your computer, you
are finding the two JPGs and no NEF. Is that correct?

Are you using a program to transfer the picts to your computer?
If so, what program?

I am suspicious that the problem may be caused by software, not by
the camera itself.

Change the camera's transfer mode to from "PTP" to "Mass storage" (or is it the other way around? ;)). Better still, get a card reader.

Thanks for this suggestion, which I'll try, and report back. It's when I look at the camera in "My Computer" that I'm seeing the 2 small JPGs on the camera (i.e. before downloading them). But, when I look at the file information on the camera's screen, it says that the pics are "RAW + Basic".

No, you're just seeing what Windows is telling you. Windows doesn't understand what a NEF file is but it can see the JPEG that is embedded in it (even if you just shoot raw, a full-size JPEG will be embedded in the file), and it is showing you that instead.

Change the camera's USB mode to "mass storage".

I think you should download the latest version of the software or try Capture NX.

I once had a problem opening NEF files. Got some error message saying the file format was not compatible with the supplied software.

I posted a thread, and one use suggested upgrading the software to the latest version or try using the latest version of Capture NX.
And it worked!

Hope this helps.
