400d Dust Query

Hi all

I know this has been discussed many times but...

I've just noticed on some macro shots I've taken today that the pictures are covered in dust spots. Being relatively new to DSLRs, having bought my 400d a couple of months ago, I'm not sure what's an excessive amount of dust on the sensor. To date I've taken about 1600 shots and changed the lens about 5 times.

Ignore the quality of the picture but does anyone have any thoughts about the dust spots? I've tried running the auto sensor cleaning a few times but the spots remain when I shoot against a white background at f22. Does this need professional cleaning or should it be returned to the store I bought it at.

Thanks

Simon.

The dust can stick on sensor if it's too humid. You can get a Rocket Air Blaster to blow the dust off, make sure the battery is fully charged and face the camera down. The instruction is in the manual.

Don't get other brand, my Hukuba blew more rubber debris to the sensor, I have to use lens solution to get it off (microfiber cloth wrapped on top of Q-Tips with one drop).

Send it back to Canon and let them deal with it. Don't try to clean it yourself!

Why not? It's very easy, I've done it once. I was really nervous about it but it was very, very easy.

A tip is to clean it inside a bathroom, since it's more heavy air in a bathroom and the dust gets heavier and will not just blow out and get in again, it will fall to the ground, slowly.

Good luck!

and get an Olympus E-500 (a great camera), you will never have
problems with dust again!
You mean the dust problems, right!
However, I didnt know that the Oly NEVER has a dust problem :)

I find your pic very strange. It does not at all look like the dust I used to have in the 350D, or still have in the 20D. In both cases, the dust shows as ill defined shadows, much, much bigger than your spots, and also fainter.

I never had any spot of dust with the 400D, and even with the 350D and 20D never have seen that amount of dust.

What f stop are you using? Dust should not show at all except from f/11 or f/16 upwards, which strikes me as an odd setting for a flower picture

I never had any spot of dust with the 400D! And yes, the E-500 is a great camera, but not the only one without dust.

I agree with Antonio, this dust pattern looks very suspicious. I have taken nearly 80 000 shots with my 350D (XT), and I have 6 lenses and switch often, probably at least once per day in average. I have seen dust many times on my sensor (that I cleaned by blowing and/or Methano-based cleaning solution), and it never looked like that, even once I had a really big one (I could see it by looking on the sensor), it was never that sharp. I would contact Canon and verify your lense since it also may be a lot of dust inside your lense, not on the sensor (but this is for me unheard of).
Good luck,
Fred

By coincidence I got this problem at the weekend. It turned up on a picture taken at f/29 (trying to get a slow shutter speed without a ND filter). The dust was completely invisible at f/11

This is very right, especially if the camera is new, and still covered by warranty. It appears that several people had their cameras coming already dirty from the factory. If you send in your freshly bought camera, rather than quietly try to clean it yourself, at least they may notice the problem.

As I mentioned I am pretty new to DSLR photography and as I've just bought an EF-S 60mm macro lens I was experimenting with various aperture values to see the difference. The dust spots show from around f16 onwards.

It definately isn't the lens because I get exactly the same spots with my EF-S 17-85mm lens.

Thanks for all of the comments so far. I'm going to try to clean this myself with a blower and see what happens.

How did you get on with the blower and did it remove all the dust? I've got a new (one month old now) 400D and have now spotted a few dust specs. Did you send your camera back to Canon for a free/warranty clean? Not sure how Jessops deal with things like this, will give them a call...
Thanks
Simon
