I would like to find a small, inexpensive, portable
device to copy files from flash cards to DVD(s).

Imagine a small device resembling a DVD player with
a DVD burner and card reader.

Something much smaller and lighter than a laptop.

Its not really small, or portable or cheap. But that is the closest thing to it. I find it useless because to me portable means battery powered device.

What reason would you need it for? If you are looking for a way to backup your photos when you are on the road you can get a smaller hard drive backup device that can hold a lot more data. Also you won't need to rely on a AC/DC power to use it like that dvd backup burner.

If you are looking for a why to just burn dvd at home, just get a dvd burner for your computer or buy a notebook.

The only use that I see it useful would be if you work at a field that requires you to burn dvd/cd for clients while you are on the road.

Hama and Delkin also used to offer one. Don't know if they still do though.
You can check their websites.

i think the vrd-mc3, has a 2.5 lcd that could be the only difference. i only saw 2 on the sony site. the VRD-MC3 and the VRD-VC30.

I see two primary uses of this kind of device over the hard disk based ones. If you are taking an extended trip, you might well want to back up your photos along the way and mail them home. Second, if you are traveling in a country where theft is an important concern, backing up to DVD's allows you to protect the DVDs (hide them, put them in a room safe, carry them with you).

I guess there's also the insurance point of view. If you use a HD based device, one disaster can destroy all your pictures, but if you use several DVD's then a single disaster will only destroy part of your archive.

...what for?

(I'm not aware of such a thing existing either.)
