1st Shot Black issue Official Anouncement

Thanks for the confirmation that the error is logged on my camera but I've read that it should show as err in the viewfinder and whenever I get the first black frame everything is dead. When I shut down and start up again, no err in the viewfiinder.

Anyway I've the official announcement from Minolta to print off to take with me back to Jessops. The camera is now out of warranty but I was told by the assistant that although no fault was found it was logged as n intermittant fault and was covered if it reoccured.

This is good news for Minolta owners.

Konica Minolta is gone! IMO Sony has to officially recognize the problem and repair it!

Always having fun with photography ...

So what is our regional repair location? Just got my 7D back a week and a half ago and it's already done the first black frame.

Do I send it back to Precision?

Great announcement but, as usual, the UK repairers (JP service Solutions) say they only heard about this late last week, have none of the replacement parts and would have to order them in the usual way.

Since "usual" has meant my 7D being 2 months with JPSS and they have just now got the parts they ordered for me!

More optimistically, JPSS say they have only see 15 ocurrences of this error since they took over in April.

rather a defective part and any and all cameras that have not had the parts replaced, should. Whether it happens or not is mute, it's a matter of whether your camera has the defective build.

Just my thought!

all cameras with the defective part should have them replaced, even if they still haven't shown the symptom.

KM is not making a recall, they are only acknowledging that the problem exists, but better this then nothing I guess.

I've sent my 7D to Videp in Belgium last friday with the same "1st black frame" problem. My camera shuts down after taking the 1st frame.

Reading all these complaints I'm afraid that it could take a while before getting my camera back since Videp posted the camera to Germany to repair it.

Hope te get it back before march 9th. I'm leaving to Vietnam for a month then, it would be a pitty not to have my camera with me...

Maybe it's the time to buy a new one in Hong Kong, I'm stuck there for 4 hours before heading to Saigon.
Might that be a good ( cheaper) idea?

Lucky to have this forum, the best way to keep up to date with KM, since there are not that much (read none) newsletters from the sony side...

She's on her way to Enfield, CT.

I decided to just bite the bullet and send the camera in for repair. I made sure I enclosed a print-out of the KM website describing the problem, along with a copy of the Repair Request (Event number).

The Sony website required me to enter a CC# in order to complete the form. I made sure to note that the repair was supposed to be no charge are per the KM announcement. So, I guess it's just wait and see now.

Hopefully I'll have it back in a few weeks.

I'll post back as I find things out if anyone is interested.

Got an e-mail from the Dutch/Belgian repair service today.

They also recognized the "1st Black shot" problem and aknowleged the free of charge repair.

you just send it in?

Curious to see what they do since it is not dead, they refused to fix mine, but then this was before the new position.

1st shot everyday had the problem. Sometimes after letting the camera sit for 2 or 3 hours it would have the problem.

Hopefully they'll fix it since it is exactly the problem as described on the KM website. I would have to turn the camera off/on to resolve it.

As I was getting to the end of warranty and a family member is interested in it. They didn't have it on thewarranty info in the check-in but I copied the authorization and did not authorize payment. I sent a copy of the receipt, the KM warranty slip, and the email from Sony to KM and back with my extension record.

Haven't heard anything back, it shows as in repair on the automated status system.

While I won't mind selling to my cousin, a buyback would have helped fill out my new kit some.

I bought it in Sep 05 and no black frames in the first few months.

Now I got it more often but not all the time. Many of us want to know ,from whoever send the camera back to fix this problem, how to properly obtain the service agreement with Sony/KM.

The question is:
  • WHO and HOW to contact the Sony service dept to get an agreement for fixing the first frame locked up?
  • Does Sony acknowledge this common problem or we have to prove it?
and how?

I don't think they will try and try until they see the problem so will they fix it anyway or we have to send back and forth?

thanks.

I had the 1st shot problem and some flew spots on my pictures.

I made a phonecall to the Belgian dealer and they said I best turned in the camera. I went to their office and explained what the problems were.

They wrote it down and told me it could take about 4 weeks before the camera would be returned because they had to sent it to Germany.

Later that day I took a look at this forum and saw that I wasn't the only one with the first shot problem.

I called the Belgian service center the next day and told them about the official announcement. They said they didn't knew about it but later that day I got an e-mail that everything would be repaired without costs. [Also the problem with the spots on my pictures (dust on the CCD they said).]

My camera is almost 1 week in repare, fingers crossed ... I need it again on March 9th because I go on holiday by then. It would be preferable to test the camera a few days before I leave.

I'll keep in contact if further information comes along...

I am very interested & pleased that Konica-Minolta has faced up to their customers rights & taken appropriate action to remedy this matter.

Some weeks I ago I wrote to them advising them that this issue should be addressed & that many people would think badly of them if they did not solve this problem & that it could affect many peoples future buying decisions with regard to their imaging & photocopying machines.

I wish to congratulate them for taking a sensible & timely decision to remedy this unfortunate design & manufacturing problem & they deserve credit for this action. This restores my faith in their status as a responsible & caring company & I wish them luck in their future business ventures.

I have this problem if I let my 5D sit for a while. I hate to send it away since I would be without a camera. Will it keep getting worse and eventually become unusable? Thanks

There have been those who say that their cameras eventually became virtually unusable. You would be advised to get your camera fixed at a time which will inconvenience you the least. You could phone your service agents & discuss this matter with them.

Who can say?

Myself I dont have the issue..but if I did...camera or no camera..I would rather have it fixed....and as it will cost nothing (bar some postage)...even out of warranty...probably wise to get it sorted...

Up to you though...you can wait. I wouldnt...

Just grab a 35mm for a few weeks! thats what I did! lol
