Whats the fastest zoom i can have for below $350. Or does no such thing as fast, relatively cheap zoom exist? :-(

Looking for something mabye approx from f1.8 to f4 and covering maybe a 35mm to 100 mm range.

Also how much can a f1.8, 85 mm and 105mm prime be had for ?

  • Tamron 28-75 2.8 if you can find a good copy.
  • Sigma 24-60 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 28-70 2.8 - if you can find a good copy.
  • Tokina 28-70 2.8, 28-70 2.6-2.8, 28-80 2.8 - if internal flare doesn't bother you and you can find a good copy.
Zooms don't get faster than 2.8 (to the best of my knowledge). If you want faster there're plenty of used excellent primes in the range that sell for less than $350 (28/2 Ai, 35/2, 50/1.8, 50/1.4, 85 1/8, etc.)

Nikkor 35-70 2.8D can be had for around $250 (used). Sharp throughout range and constant 2.8. May not be long enough for you tho at 70mm end.

I have the Tamron 28-75 2.8 and is really amazing. Very sharp maybe equal (or even better than my 50 1.8). The problem is that occasionaly it backfocuses. I think I have a bad copy. Tomorrow I'm gonna have it tested with a proffessional photographer and another Nikon camera (maybe D2X). If I have the same results I'm gonna send it back for repairing.

All I can say right now is that if you get a good copy then you are going to have an amazing lens with the Tamron

check http://www.keh.com - they ship worldwide via Fedex/UPS and are very reliable. Also, their 'bargain' quality is really a bargain for the buyer - I bought 3 'bargain' lenses from them and in my book they're 'almost like new'
