Actually I dont know anything about it, but I think it's a very interesting tripod because its easier to carry in my backpack. I would like to know more about it (especially the quality of it etc) so if anyone know please post. Or if you decide on getting it please tell about it!

Hi Matt,

I never tested the Magic, but maybe you like to know, that I got the Cullmann 3335 macro tripod and like it very much. You can shoot from 2cm above the ground up to a hight of 2m.

It's in the big picture here:
http://www.cullmann.de/foto/C31E060E-1C4E-11D5-9596-0040C799A3F2&lan=en

I got it together with the adjustment platform and a tripod bag for about $165 in Germany.

Greetings from Germany

Chris
Does anyone have opinions or views on this tripod?

http://www01.bhphotovideo.com/default.sph/FrameWork.class?FNC=ProductActivator__Aproductlist_html___14703___CUM2___REG___CatID=2635___SID=EC251CC02B0

I am thinking about getting it, and wanted some feedback before I
order it.

Does anyone know where I can get the Cullmann Magic 1? It is the
same but does not have the QR Head, and is cheaper.

Thanks,
Matt.

Hi Matt,
Hummmmm, let's see.

After going thru all the combinations and permutations you have gone thru on this forum re: tripods/monopods/bipods/quadrapods/pentapods et. al.--if you had gotten a part time job at $3.76/hr for the time you have spent on this forum you would be the proud owner of a lifetime guaranteed "world's most adaptable tripod " the Gitzo 2220 Explorer!!!!!!!!!!long ago!!!!!!!!!!!

BTW the best kept Bogen/Manfrotto secret is their 3009 mini ball head for about $25. It fits in your pocket, and is MORE than enough for a G1/2/ I have even used it with my EOS5 and beileve it or not my Mamiya 645E.

Hi Matt,

its great that you brought this matter up! I am using this tripod for almost 7 years now. It is my favourit travelmate and has accompanied me in Australia, NZ, Cuba, USA, Scottland,Greece ... These voyages took place way before my entry into digital photography. I used my Nikon SLR-equipment as well as my Mamyia middle format camera and made very good experiences.

The tripod has four big advantages:

(1) size: it fits into any backpack and still is very stable.

(2) time to setup: it just takes a view seconds to unfold. The tripod has a very smart mechanism, so that you just have to pull the end of each leg and screw it tight once. That´s it.

(3) quick-connector: I bought a couple of quick connectors for my camera collection. I keep these connectors on my cameras so that I do not have to screw and unscrew the cameras to my tripod all the time. This saves a lot of time in those moments that really count.

(4) Cullmann service

Once I had touble with one leg of my tripod. I sent it directly to the Cullman service in Germany. Those guys repaired it in a very short time without charging me anything besides the postage (even though guarantee time had been over for quit some time).

I hope this helps. If I have time, I will scan an image I have taken with the Cullman Magic to give you an example.

Yours,

As I've written before, I have a Cullman Magic 2 and love it. It's small, versatile and quite stable, especially for it's size and weight. In answer to your question about the Magic 1, I imagine B+H can supply one even if it isn't on their website. The Magic 1 is a tad smaller, due to the smaller head, but be aware that you give up the option of using it as a monopod.

Incidentally, rather than buy a carry case for my Cullman, I simply took a shoulder strap off an old duffle bag, clipped the two ends together, slid the strap under the top of the folded tripod, and voila!, a custom carry strap. Because the Magic folds flat, it's comfortable to carry that way, resting against your back.

Yes, it is over your $100 budget, but that's because it's made in Germany, not China.

Also, how high does it go?

Chris,

Is the cullmann 3335 as shown or is that macro arm an accessory? I'm not seeing pricing or specs on that page. What is closed height vs all extended height? Weight? A url that actually sells this one?

I may well have to sell my ebay special in favor of this beauty.

Matt, don't let them fault you for your long search. Had I waited a few more days this Cullmann would be on its way to me by now.

Can you adjust the legs to different angles on the Cullman Magic 2? Or can they only be fixed in a couple of different positions?

Hi Matt,

I have that tripod. It´s a very fine piece, well build and solid enough to G2. The main advantages of it are:
Assimetrical leg position: You can place it anywhere. It´s very, very versatil.

It folds on a plane and takes very few space to store. It´s also lightweight (relative). You can use it as a monopod (not very usefull to me). The ball head is very easy to use and very quick to operate. Central mast can be inverted and placed below the legs. With that feature you can shot ground level macro shots easily.

I haqve a Magic 2 ,too, and I´m very happy with it: Good to travel with, easy to handle, solid German brand and equally suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Johannes

Sorry no.

Yes, that was one of the reasons I bought it.
Does it
come with the "macro arm" or is it extra accessories?
Yes, it comes with the macro arm and the adjustment platform ... with a bit of practice it's even nice for panoramas, though not perfect for this task.
It also came with a tripod bag ... all for 330DM ~ 169€.

The only con is the size (pack size 69cm) and wheight (2360 gramms).

Hi Terry!
Is the cullmann 3335 as shown or is that macro arm an accessory?
It comes with the macro arm, the adjustment platform and a tripod bag ... it's called the The Macro Set (don't remember the number).
I'm not seeing pricing or specs on that page.
Download the english/german catalogs:
http://www.cullmann.de/pict/download/QEEZ4S3LLJSLD56INLQOCGL17.pdf
http://www.cullmann.de/pict/download/VEFYHPCS27X5YFTPJDASSRYK2.pdf
What is closed height vs all extended height? Weight?
Closed height is 69cm and the weight is 2360 gramms ... the only cons.

BTW - in the catalog the wrote the maximum working height is about 160cm ... I found out, that you can raise it up to about 2 meters with the help of the macro arm :-)
A url that actually sells this one?
Sorry, I don't know ... I bought it at a local dealer ... but I know, that Cullmann is available in the US ... maybe this email helps:

Yes, the Cullmann 3335 is a great tripod, but I should mention, that it is not that sturdy as a Manfrotto ... but it's also not as expensive ... and sturdy enough for my purposes.

Hi Matt!
Yes, but this is the link to the Cullmann Magic 2, you asked about in the beginning of this thread.

I talked about the Cullmann 3335 macro tripod, I bought for myself:

Matt, I'm not sure how tall it is (I don't have it in front of me), probably around 4.5 - 5', you can get that from the B+H site. The height is just fine for the G2 as I rotate the LCD to the appropriate position and shoot. A couple of nights ago I needed to shoot pics of a couple of eBay items (cleaning house), the Magic made it easy. I set up on the dining room table, flipped the central post to the under position, rotated the LCD to face up and was able to easily shoot macro shots without craning or crawling.

As to stability, it's tough to describe "stable", it just is. The legs are a lot thicker than Velbon/Slik type tripods (also they are finished in a very nice sort of non-glare titanium anodizing) and the whole piece has a quality feel to it, i.e. the parts snap into position. A trick others sometimes use is to hang a weight of the tripod, like a camera bag. This lowers the center of gravity and adds stability, works on all tripods, at least those that can hold the weight (Magic is rated for 8lbs.).

Yes, the legs can be individually adjusted. They set up fast, too. When storing the unit folded leave all legs loose, then to set up, pull the leg out and you need only tighten the lowest ring to tighten the entire leg. Dunno how that works, but it does.

alan.

Thanks for all the info, Chris. Much appreciated!

But B&H sell the standard version, not the macro set ... so it
comes without tripod bag and without the Cullmann 3077 adjustment
platform. But I think the price of $136.50 is o.k..
