While I hate to use the word "should", I must say that you "should" get to NYC at some point in your life.
Great museums, diverse people, cultures and food, fascinating architecture, theatre, ballet, opera, interesting neighborhoods...one could go on and on and on.
People have come to and through this city for generations making it the fascinating melting pot that it is.
A little bit of my family's story (and it's quite typical):
My maternal grandfather came here from Poland about a year before WW1 broke out. His plan was to work and make enough to send for his wife and son. When the war broke out that couldn't happen so the wife and son were left to survive, pretty much, on the streets, scavanging for what they could until the war was over.
During that time my grandfather lived in an area known as the lower east side. He would walk six miles each way to work to save the 5 cent fare so he could save more quickly to send for his family. He shared a room and what were called "hotbeds" during this time. They were called hotbeds because three men would share a bed sleeping in 8 hour shifts and working the other 16 hours - so the bed never got cold.
My grandmother and uncle survived the war - barely - and my grandfather sent for them as soon as he could. He moved them up to Bridgeport Conn. and opened an old-fashioned Deli. He did pretty well and during the depression he fed half the neighborhood - black, white, brown, yellow, green and pink - didn't matter how they looked, only that they were in need and hard working like he was - and never asked for a dime.
This city is filled with these stories...it's what gives it such a delicious flavor.
cheers,
charles
