I guess this firmware upgrade let's us know......

More like the D50 worked first time and didn't need fixing :-)

I dont think the D50 has a retouching mode that crashes? Also the D50 is now 'old' compared to the D40 and D80, which have a lot more in common when it comes to the 'guts' I think. Don't quote me on that.

how Nikon feels about D50 owners. Sure would be nice to get some
much pleaded for upgrades, but I guess we're not that important to
them for some reason.
It's starting to hack me off.
What is it that needs fixing?

SDHC should be supported by the firmware update,
just like Pentax did.

OK - some would want this. Personally, I use 1GB cards so not to have all my eggs in one basket.

You can already use 4Gb Sd cards, just format them as fat32 on your pc beforehand.

My D80 does format in camera, but my D50 still handles them no problem and has done since January 06.

D50 firmware is as advertised, it works.

It's funny- when I use my K100D, I am cognizant of the fact that it has a couple of limitations, like terrible onboard flash and occasional dodgy WB.
They rarely ruin a shoot for me and mostly, the K100D is a great camera.
But I think of them.

But when I use my D50, I'm always reminded what a GREAT camera it is.
I think that Nikon did a superb engineering job with the camera.
It just doesn't have any serious issues for me that need fixing via firmware.

It just delivers, time after time. If the other Nikons are as good as the D50, then Nikon is in good shape.

Well said, and all true. And- I looked at the download site for the D40. I count 26+ seperate instructions to do the download. Can you imagine several thousand newbies trying to do this for the first time?

I wouldn't want to be in the Nikon tech support call center this week. This forum should also be busy with pleas for help........I think I will go out and shoot some photos now- with my "old" D50.

To be fair the instructions are not difficult to follow at all - in fact "newbies" will probably have an easier time upgrading firmware than veterans (many don't read the instructions properly and load both the A and B firmware onto the card at the same time). The instructions were clear and reasonably concise.

The "newbies" may be confused by the fact that Nikon talks about formatting the CF card though...

I have an idea. Go ahead and explain that part, about formatting the CF card, because I am a newbiw and was wondering that very question. That way I don't have to start another thread asking.

It always makes me mad when I buy something...router, modem, camera, whatever and have to do a firmware update on it to fix something. To me, they are always scary.

I'd have to notice something wrong with my D50 to do an update. The ability to format 4 meg cards wouldn't do it for me.
