hi everyone,I know this question bores you
but I am a starter and doesnt understand f:2,8 or 33 mm or macro..

I just bought my rebel xti because I hate to wait untill shutter is done ..compact digital machines bores me..
SO please advice me a lens..so I will buy directly that your advise lens..
kind regards

If you're starting out, start with the kit lens - you have a very steep learning curve an getting a good lens will likely only lead you to blame the lens - in reality you likely have at least a year before you exceed the limitations of the kit lens.

you should have bought the kit lens, but since you didn't, it's not too late to do so. http://www.bhphotovideo.com is a highly reputible dealer, they have the kit lens (EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II) for about $100-$150 US. more expensive than if you bought the lens with the camera, but cheaper than any other lens you will find out there.

to answer your questions:

f/2.8 is the aperture. a larger aperture means more light enters the lens. more light entering the lens = faster shutter speeds. also, larger aperture means shallower DOF (blurry background and foreground). a smaller f/stop number means a larger aperture. on a lens, the aperture is the lens' MAXIMUM aperture. in other words, an f/2.8 lens is "faster" than an f/4.0 lens. of course all lenses can be "stopped down" to smaller apertures.

33mm is the focal length. prime lenses have a fixed focal length. zoom lenses can change their focal length. think of your P&S camera's zoom mechanism. it goes from wide angle to telephoto. on your XTi, 17-18mm is considered wide angle, 30mm is considered "normal" and 50mm and up is telephoto. if you want a standard zoom lens with a wide angle, try to find one that starts off in the 17-8mm range, like the EF-S 17-85mm ... or the EF-S 18-55mm ..., or the sigma 17-70mm. lenses with longer focal lengths on the long end will obviously "zoom in" more. for instance, 85mm is more "zoomed in" than 55mm.

macro defines the lens' ability to close focus. a true macro lens can close focus on an object to a 1:1 magnification -- that means that the image will be lifesize on the sensor. true dedicated macro lenses are typically prime lenses (do not zoom in or out) and cost a little extra. macro lenses do focus to infinity -- meaning they can be used as normal lenses, too. some lenses claim to be "macro" even though they only focus down to 1:2 magnification. although that is technically "macro" only true macro lenses can focus down to 1:1

the 60 macro (for filling the frame with say an insect) and the 10-22 (super wide angle) are designed for the smaller sensor body so they are both relatively light and compact. I get a lot of use out of both on my 30D. hard to cover every situation with just one lens.

sample 10-22 shot:

I got one from Beach Camera a few weeks ago for $209 USD. I ended up selling it to my brother because, like you, he had recently bought a xti and only had a 50mm f1.8.

It's an excellent lens for the money. I would have kept it, but I already had a Tokina 24-200 that I love and I have been into shooting prime lenses (non zooms) lately, so it would have gotten no use.

Just make sure you get the right one. Canon has another 28-105 that isn't nearly as good, but it looks totaly different. It's easy to tell them apart.

Try to increase your budget to $450. Try the Tamron
17-50mm f/2.8

If you want to save money in the short term, register on
the fredmiranda.com forums and post a want-add for a
kit lens. You should be able to get one for $60 or $70.
It's not bad for a starter lens, and a good photographer,
like Daniella on this forum, can get excellent shots with it.

I have to say i'm clueless at your reason of purchasing a DSLR if a P&S camera bores you, with so many great P&S out in the market it gets me excited that some of them are getting closer to DSLR(fujifilm f20-to name one).I disagree with that statement totally and wonder if your even going to enjoy your DSLR?Sure the camera has alot more to offer but bored, really? and then invest $1200 more?

I have to be reading into this wrong or something, it must be me because i don't get it?

I used sony cyber shot series..I used canon powershot a series...and I dont want to wait altough it is only a second...
I want to press the button and shot...

There is some blurness in compact machines..and never catch a movement...it is so hard...
and there is no chance to take wide view...
flash re-time is long...

you can shoot over 600 pictures with a slr machine but in a compact it is only 300...not too more...

and of course it is small compact...wide screenn(3 inches) and also online screen view from the scene...that is good points...
but I decided to buy slr because of new year party dissappointing..
I shoot several photos with my sony t1 and result sucks...
poor images...
and I make everone to wait several times to taken good result

I know in photography photo machine is not important..important thing is light and other issues...but when you use a slr..you never want to use compact machines again...really..although they are heavy big and expensive..

That sounds like just the lens to suit the man's need.

Seconded.

I wouldn't buy the kit lens no matter how cheap it was.

Peternik already suggested a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5, I second that, it's a very good all purpose lens and you should also get the Canon 50mm f/1.8 for low light indoor work.. Your money should cover both lens..

Get a good flash for indoor family pictures.
and I also want to very wide scenes..nearly panaromic...which
lenses should I buy
Start of with your 17-70 - that's pretty wide to begin with. Go too wide and you don't get much detail, just excessive sky and foreground. Most good panoramas are many images stitched together.
