Post samples: Classic 40's movie B&W style or other era.

Thx for the history Michael :)

The post processing is less that you think, just a slight adjustment of curves and some correction of skin blemishes, and then some selective glaussian blur. As always a good make up artist makes a huge difference.

Wow, a lot of nice work in this thread.

You nailed the look VirtualMike, awesome shots.

Nice shots GlenGrant, although I find the M16 to be very out of
place. :)
You might want to inquire with some local gun clubs and I'm sure
someone can loan you a Tommygun.
Technically I agree about the M16 (all the corps ever issued me was an M1)

But in the real world the M16 probably works OK. Hey's it retro modern.

It's a fake, original green in colour (to ensure fake) but Ian (m-model) figured to spray paint it black :), it's was all we could come up with and given the time's we are in all I would need would be to have a Tactical Force desend upon a simple shoot.

Glad you liked it.

Most of the guys I know who were issued M16s managed to get shot at from time to time. I far preferred my M1. I have to wonder if I could still disassemble and reassemble one in a reasonable length of time, 40+ years later!

fellows work. If it doesn't meet your criterea of 40's style glam, that's OK, but I thought I would share his work for those who haven't seen it.

shot with 2 umbrellas; one main in "paramount" lighting position over her head, other as fill just to camera right and low.

There's three ways to approach the classic Hollywood style: 1) try and replicate the look in both lighting style and in the subject, 2) use the lighting style but on a modern subject, and 3) have your subject look the part but use modern lighting techniques.

In the following images, I explicitly used 30's lighting and posing styles, but kept the subject dressed in thoroughly modern attire. The posing is very masculine without being aggressive, a style that is quite lost in these de-masculinated times of ours.

Although the are digital captures and processed in both C1 and Photoshop, I have avoided modern retouching technques which render the skin as plastic. Just curves, cropping and sharpening, and a little dodging and burning.

So, you are saying that your mind is a little out of focus too? Sorry, I couldn't resist. :)
That last one is my preference. It seems to really nail it, even
though you think it's more extreme. But, hell, I was a kid in the
'40s, so who really knows.

Not very versed on the 40s look but here's my first ever attempt. Any comments and/or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
