Hello,

This will sound like a stupid question, but I recently purchased a sony DSC-H5 and I'm having the hardest time trying to figure out how to connect my external strobe lights to it. How do I connect it to my sync cord?

except by using some kind of optical control, triggered by the H5's internal flash. H5 has no provision at all for external flash control, unfortunately. All the H-series so far are the same.

The only way to use external flashes with the H5 is to have them triggered by the H5 internal flash. You may want to diffuse the H5 flash or cover its front altogether leaving just enogh space to trigger the slaves.

Your need to use "digital" slaves that can be set up to ingnore the pre-flash strobe generated by all digital cameras.

If you already have an external flash that is not a slave, you can buy a slave trigger adapter.

Just research this topic on this forum or look for digital slave flashes and adapters on http://www.bhphoto.com .

Good luck.

...at least, not directly. It's the same with several of the main players in the all-in-one superzoom category.

The best way to do it is use an optical trigger of the type that will discount the H5's pre-flash, and irradiate this with the H5's on-board flash, set to -2 EV so as to reduce the battery hit and recycle time. To remove the effect of direct frontal lighting you can use a white card to deflect the light upwards, or else use an IR-pass filter which you can make from a piece of processed but unexposed colour reversal film.

Triggers to consider:

Sunpak bracket -- don't know if it has a PC terminal or you'd need to add a hot-shoe-to-PC adapter:

if any of these optical triggers can be used on the F32X. I already have the F32X for my V1, but, of course, I can't use it on my H5, unless something like this will work.
