Nice capture Bruce. I never saw any birds in Elk Grove Village.

Just reloacted from Chicago area about a year ago.

Thanks for sharing.--Jeff SWB9ZPOUZI 21OO B-3oo Tcon Fourteen

...nice job, Bruce...but what you have there is a Cormorant, if I'm not mistaken...
...thanks,

Right buzz - that Egret is a Cormorant.--'All the world is on the tip of the tongue, or just past the end of our lense!'Kim

You're both right. It's a cormorant. (We have lots of them in Florida).

The reason you'll most often see them with their wings spread is because they don't have oil glands so their feathers get (and stay) wet. After going for a swim they spread their wings out to dry. Anhingas, which look very much like cormorants, do the same thing.

It's fun to watch them swim. They stay close to the surface of the water, with their necks (s-shaped) and head out- looking much like snakes.

Thanks for setting me right. I should have looked it up in my bird book.

Hey! These guys can really swim under water!

I came across this egret in Elk Grove Park, Elk Grove, CA. He (or
she?) was standing on a rock in the pond with his wings
out-streched. Looked like he was saying "This is all mine."

As usaual, feedback is appreciated.

I think this may be what an egret looks like!

Hi Bruce,

Nice shots, it's hard to get those ID's right, too many kinds of birds. Even the same species have many variations. I never thought I'd get into it, but I just picked up a few books myself, and even each book's pictures look a little different for the same bird. So sometimes I'll just post and hope someone corrects me. (male, female, breeding, non-breeding..., it never ends) LOL!

OK, for my work I operate a Jimboy's Tacos near I-80 and Watt Ave. I don't suppose many people here have even heard of it.

I would like to go on a shoot, did you get my e-mail? or you can send me one. I don't mean to be pushy though, it can be kinda weird on the net.

Hopefully everyone on this forum is normal .......I take that back, a few are really twisted and I'm keeping a list. I'm down to the E's now, anyone come to mind ?

...not the accuracy of the description, but the fact you're sharing interesting photos...and a nice job, at that...

...even his eminence Ergon, confused his pony with a deer...now that's strange!...
...have fun,
buzzy

Yes, it's a cormorant, and what a magificent bird.

I have seen these for decades, while surfing, and I didn't know what they were. Now, through this forum and through my newfound apppreciation of birds with the E-100, I know.

A new world has opened. I'm grateful.
