Why do we have to take photos using this ancient technique, when we can all obtain sophiscated and accurate lences at an affordable price?

Well, you don't HAVE to...

Maybe people do because it's fun, easy and something different...? Kinda like saying "Why go to the game when I can watch it on TV for free?"

hi,

i found a german internetshop selling pinholes for a couple of cameras. if you are interested, here is the link for an EOS pinhole

http://www.monochrom.com/MonoC/asp/rmiArt003.asp?artnum=00005314

the focal length for slrs varies from 25-50mm, aperture from from f160 to f250, all depending on the construction of the camera and the hole. the body of the hole is made of plastic, the hole is made of metal.

enjoy, ulli.

definition of a hole:

space surrounded by matter. In this case surrounded by metal. A hole can not be made of metal. A hole cannot be touched. A hole only exists if it has the "hole holding body".

my 2 cents

oh, i 'm so very sorry for my stupid translation of the german text, but i think you know what i meant ... the hole is made IN metal ... or better through metal ... or is the metal made around the hole ... i don't really know ...

I guess the reason is that you can increase your knowledge and love of photography by working with pinhole cameras. It's like people who still do B&W photography by converting a spare bathroom into a darkroom.

Besides if you think the pinhole crowd is strange, you should talk to the people who are still into doing daguerreotypes...

In general, if you attempt to project your personal ideas of what photography is and what it isn't onto other people in this forum, you will find yourself the object of derision and flamage. Of course if that's what you want, more power to ya!

Apparatus: A toy that simulates thought and is so complex that the person playing with it cannot comprehend it; its game consists of combinations of symbols contained in its program; while fully automated apparatuses have no need of human intervention, many apparatuses require humans as players and functionaries.
Vilém Flusser

We use pinhole cameras to break the automatism. To remember we are not just taking images but thinking with images, that there is a myriad ways of seeing besides the one Fuji, Canon, Nikon or Kodak has chosen for us.

hmmm....points taken

However I have to admit that I couldn't really think with images without a viewfinder. I am a believer in clear and sharp images. But this is just personal taste.

Hehe…I have sensed that. I prefer living in peace so I think I’d better not ask more questions like this for the sake of harmony. I have a friend who is an editor for a photography magazine and he told me that if he couldn’t find a clear focus in a photo, it’s in the bin straightway. I guess pinhole photos could never get published on his magazine.

Obviously a "photography" technophobe thing not a real photography magazine. photography is about light, composition, subject interest and art - It is not about lens sharpness!!
