Have any of you fellow Great White Northers had the Lensmate for your G1/ G2 shipped up here? What damage does the post office inflict for taxes and brokerage fee?
I may get it sent to a friend hollidaying in Arizona.

I know UPS is a big mistake for parcels coming into Canada. But Every time stuff has come through the post for me, it is held by the post office until you pay the tax (14% in BC) and they also tag on a $5.00 fee for collecting the tax for the govt. I had heard that this fee had gone up to $15.00 . I don't know if it is on all packages or on those above a certain value.

Mark,
I'm expecting mine next week. One chap in Toronto told me his
arrived at his door with no interference from Customs. Lensmate
uses the USPS so it comes through the mail and you avoid the $30
brokerage fee you pay for UPS and Fedex shipments. I'm keeping my
fingers crossed. Cheers

I remember reading that someone paid a total of ~$62 Cdn.

I'm getting ready to order one myself....so I can use filters and for lens protection. The Canon adapter is an alternative and cheaper (in Canada).

I've received 2 orders from these folks here in Winnipeg. No surprises beside the exchange. The 5.00 shipping charge sent covered the postage

As a previous poster noted, sometimes the CPS will hold a parcel for collection of taxes and ransom.

As an alternative, it is possible to get the Tiffen adapter for G1/G2

(CANG1AD?, 34.99 CDN), e.g. from http://www.henrys.com . It has a 43 mm thread, but those filters are hard to find in good quality brands, at least in the GWN. (Try to find a 43 mm lenscap!! Hah!) I got a 43 to 46 mm stepup and 46 mm Hoya filters. No vignetting that I can see. The outer diameter of the Tiffen is the same as a 46 mm filter, so the step up just adds a few mm in length. It only comes in black. GKL

I wasn't so lucky...

(Ex Rate = 1.6)
Adapter $22 USD = 35.2 CDN
Stepup $7 USD = 11.2 CDN

Total 46.4 CDN, but then postal office charged me about $8 CDN or something... damn, I shouldn't order the Stepup just to save shipping...

I believe that there is no duty on most photographic equipment from the USA to Canada but GST is payable and I believe that Customs also collects PST (they do in BC). As has been said here there seems to be an administration fee.

I did not have to pay any duty on a camera from Hong Kong but GST & PST was collected.

If you are gone for any length of time, there is a value you are allowed to bring back. I know if you are gone longer than 7 days it is $750 Can. I can't remember what the 48 hour category gets you.
One of us needs to bring back a dozen and post them around.

I live in Montreal and I have a PO Box just across the border which
is about a 40 min drive. I buy lotsa stuff from US so it's very
convenient. Of course whether or not you declare when driving
goods across is up to you.

That's very handy indeed! What is required to have a PO box down there? Thanks.
