I have used my Leica D-Lux 3 for a little over a month now. I find some of my pictures to be a little soft, and I use Photoshop to sharpen them. I have used Contax rangefinder film camera's in the past (G1 and G2), and I think the Digilux 2 would be a little better fit for my needs. I know that I will be losing some of the functionality of a 10 meg camera, however, I could use a little extra shutter speed, and the ability to use an external flash unit, rather than the built in unit on the D-Lux 3. Most of my pictures are of the 4x6" or 5x7" variety, and I believe the Digilux 2 would suit those requirements.

I welcome all comments and advice. I have not made the plunge yet, but I may while the black d-lux 3 is still in high demand.

...if you move on to the D2. Like you, I used to shoot with a Contax G2, many years ago. When I started to use my LC1, it reminded me a lot of the G2. Kind of like it's digital first cousin. You will notice a similar great IQ to the G2 with a D2.
Best,
Angus

I don't believe you will be happy with the D lux-3 if you think the pictures are soft....You can try all the different settings...but I think they will still look soft to you...they did to me...i would reccomend you sell the camera on e-bay...(probably for a profit) and use the extra money to get the camera you will be happy with...
Why not ? If Leica perfects the d lux you can always buy another !

I am considering the D2 also. I love the D-Lux 3, but really need a viewfinder.

Wouldn't it be great if they made a hybrid of these 2 cameras? The 28 mm and 16:9, but with a viewfinder and less pixels & noise?

I'm not sure you'd lose any functionality!!! A number of megapixels but no loss in quality. As has already been suggested, why don't you apply in-camera sharpening? But whatever, you won't regret getting a Digilux 2, Although a Digilux 3 might tempt me to spend some cash.....

Those images don't look soft....They are close up, shot at iso 100, they are B&W...They look fine...

but move back and take a pic of a face from 6-7 feet...then you will see the softness...

In fact the apple is soft...Look at the stem in the middle...and the colors radiating from it...SOFT !
and.....He used some unsharp mask....why?....if it wasn't soft?

My meaning of soft is illustrated in the apple scene. The black and white pictures are crisp. I want my pictures (jpeg or raw) to be as sharp as the pictures I used to obtain from my Contax cameras. I should be able to achieve that, however, I can understand some softness due to a zoom versus a fixed prime.

See, I was looking at the detail of the water on the apple and the other rotting ones just around it which all seemed sharp to me. I assumed also that the lens was pretty wide open to have the depth of field that is there.

In terms of USM to sharpen pictures, I was taught that they all should be sharpened after downsizing and for posting to the web.

I'm sorry if you think I'm harping on this topic but I want to make sure I am seeing what others are seeing.

I was assuming that the lens was pretty closed down. Besides, I am not sure the stem is completely in focus, look at the grass to the right, it looks sharp. Hmmm, maybe we all see what we want to see.

There were two reasons I did not get d lux 2. No view finder, no black. :-)

Leica corrected one in d lux 3. Hopefully, they will correct the other in d lux 4.

I think Leica should have worked with Fujifilm, which has a very nice chip for low light low noise photo.

Well, I made the plunge. But I did not get the Digilux 2 that I had intended to purchase, but found a great deal on a Panasonic DMC-LC1. I took some sample shots, and wow, this is exactly what I was looking for. I have the control I was looking for. I had given some thought to the DMC-L1, but I came to the conclusion that I probably would have settled for the similar lenth zoom 28-90mm, and why pay the difference. I'm use to the rangefinder style, and this fits the bill.

Bacman:

You will really like the LC1 - I did so much so that I just got the L1! And yes, I'm keeping my LC1 as well.

I am going to report on my progress with the L1 over in the Panasonic Forum. (It snowed here today, so no pictures.) So far I am thrilled with the camera.

You're gonna luv the D2.

I bought one when they first came out and returned it; not sure why. Noticed on the web that some of the better/best Leica posts were D2's; especially people pictures. After multiple other P&S's and a few DSLRs (which I still use), I bought another D2. It's great.

I wish I could find a back-up D2 at a decent price.
