Will these replace the DSLR ??

No, the smaller the sensor, the larger the depth of field. Creative photographers like to use a shallow depth of field at times - just look at all the posts about bokeh!

--Yes it will if they sale it as a bundel with spacial PC and softwear to make a pictures to look good coase on main strim PC or Mac you can't get much out of it.Maybe post cards 3.5x4.5

Yes I agree...should have called the thread "do you fancy one of these as well"

Vaughan
While it looks like it might be a handy peice of equipment to have
in the bag, the sensor size and the electronic viewfinder prevents
it from replacing a DSLR. I can't see performance keeping up on it
either.
Cheers, Peter.

Doesn't matter if they have a 50X zoom. Certaiin people like to be able to change lenses as the need arises!! Certain times you want prime, short, long whatever. Certain times you want a zoom, etc......
DSLR isn't going anywhere.

At least for me.

I had (have, but don't use) an Oly C-5050 (a very advanced prosumer camera some years ago) and I can say that my D50 belongs to another league.

Picture quality, features, focus, lens (capability of use great lens) of my D50 are so much better...

Also, improvements are not also happening in the P&S world, but also on the DSLR world...

I think if you put in a large sensor ( 4/3"?), IS/VR, a low f/stop at or below 1.8, a focal range of 12-500mm, minimal barrel distortion/vignetting on some unbelievable lens made by gods and a TON of manual controls, with the ability to take a big external flash, etc, you'd have a DSLR competitor.

But it'd have to be priced at about $1,000+. :)

I guess some have little experience with a decent P&S (a derogatory term obviously) or at least have not printed images from them. I have printed very high quality 8x10 shots with my old Canon S30, at a lowly 3.2MP.

So you really believe 7.1MP at ISO 100 is only good for a postcard? Sure.

Not wanting to boast or anything, but I have been using a Kodak P880 with a 24-150mm equiv w/a schneider lens for 18 months, it has a slightly larger 1/1.8 sensor, some of my images are really really good...where it does fall down is low light, and speed...but if a fixed lens cam could deliver my P880 image quality along with the speed of a DSLR...I reckon that alot of die-hard DSLR users would be vey impressed
oh BTW, my P880 shoots raw and has a hot shoe for a dedicated flash
It has its faults...but if they were ironed out........

Its not the amount of pixels that makes the image capable of being
printed larger than a post-card with decent quality.
I hope you meant is isn't the ONLY factor. I understand the demands of sensor size and density.

Greg

P&S cams can deliver some great images, I still have a fwe and still use them quite often. It's when the light starts getting low is when the DSLR really shines and the shortcommings of a small sensored P&S really becomes apparent.

YOu have guys wanting Full Framed DSLR's, I doubt you will see many dSLR users accept the shortcommings of a smaller sensor not matter how much "zoom" you give them.

Although I've obviously never used the new Olympus. It looks like an interesting camera for some, but is no dSLR. Going by the characteristics of previous cameras:

The Olympus lacks any wide-angle capabilities wider than 28mm equivalent, an f/stop faster than f/2.8, nor can you fit it with a lens with those characteristics, or a fish-eye, or any other special-purpose lens that many people need. It also likely lacks the negligible shutter lag of a dSLR, and, I assume, the noise advantage that dSLRs have (the Olympus does go up to ISO 5000, so they must have something on the ball.) Overall image quality remains to be evaluated, but I wouldn't count out barrel or pincushion distortion in such an extreme lens.

Its EVF is probably not anywhere as bright and usable as that of most dSLRs.

Basically, you're stuck with the lens they've fixed on there, so they made it as long as possible.

Still, I am sure there will be lots of folks who will love this camera if they don't want to use or can't afford a dSLR. I've laden this post with an awful lot of "ifs" and "probably's.

No boasting taken, I bet some people would be hard pressed to discern the quality of shots between a lot of cameras, myself included. But to make a blanket statement about the printing capability like that is plain wrong. I've made 4x6 prints from 1024x768 size images that were no different from the original file.

Good move...I wish I had called this thread " would you like one of these as well".....its not a DSLR replacement...but it looks mighty interesting as a carry round
