I'm wondering just what to expect from the e3 on a 990.

please check at full size and comment.

The shot was taken at 150 feet from subject @ 125sec/ f11. infinity setting.

If I'm already working at the limit for this combination, then I must say I am very disappointed. I hope the link example indicates my lack of photographic experience rather than the upper limit for the camera system.
any comment gratefully received. emes

f11. is a bit extreme Try f8. maximum Are you using a tripod? The lens would benefit from using one ( it is a heavy combination )The pic looks not to bad to me

HOW did you focus this ?????

Need to use manual focus, and LCD with 'hoodman' or similar light sheild on LCD...if you wear glasses, use them to get focus right

.....maybe 1/500....but that won't help the focus, only the offhand shooting.

YOU CAN get much better with more practice on focusing..

try this:

ZOOM WAY IN , even digitally, on the 'target'......set your focus manually in the lcd...then zoom out to frame the shot as you want...

I definitely wouldn't use the TC E3ED without a good sturdy tripod. Did you save on a high quality format?

I tried the dedicated lens settings on the 9xx series. All it does is limits the zoom range to avoid going into vigneting ereas. The settings do not improve nor enhance you shooting. I don't bother going thru the menue to change it.

Maybe there is more to it than that?-- Thomas http://www.ycsphoto.com

I shoot the 995. After much experimentation the the E3, I have found that the best results are not changing anything. Auto focus. No change in lens selection. You don't need a tripod. It only takes about a 1/2 stop more of light. I shoot basketball games @ 1/60 @ 400 iso (200 iso or 1/125 in a BRIGHT gym... or around there.). Outside, it's a BREEZE! Sharp as a tack! Outdoor baseball pics are awesome. The 995 has 4x zoom and I go about 1/2 zoom (just past vignette) for indoor shots. Full zoom does take too much light away.

Results may differ with 990, but I'm having teriffic luck with the 995 and E3 combo.
