Hi there all.

I have been reading these forums over and over and over...as I struggle with the folllowing choices.

1. Get the 1DIIN
2. Get the 5D
3. Wait for the PMA to see what happens.

Sorry to ask this, as this must have been asked many times, but with some many experienced photographers here...I thought I would ask some advice.

My current equipment includes the following.

10D
550ex
17-40 F4 L
24-70 2.8L
70-200 2.8 IS L

Powershot Pro-1

Ixy 1000 (japanese model, 10Mp portable)

You may ask what I intend to use the camera for. In all regards I am after a jack of all trades, Photography is a hobby for me. The pics I take are of my travels and no comercial value. I do not do weddings or portraits, mainly want to use it as a walkaround camera and shot some wildlife / sports. I do not itend to blow them up to A3 size or beyond. I am about to go around europe for a year, so intend to use this new camera to take the happy snappys.

I have decided it is time to retire the old 10D. Initially I was looking at the 30D, but decided to take a larger jump, I have the money so decided to spoil myself....also love my toys :)

So then I read alot about the 5D and it sounded really impressive. I was initially sold on it, the pics look awesome. Though I have to ask the question if I print in A4 will the 5D pics be much better then the 1DIIN? In all regards the 5D is a very nice piece of equipment....just wish it had the build of the 1D.

But then I held a 1DIIN....drool....it felt so nice and..just shouted quality. This felt in another league to the 5D. I do not mind the size/weight, I play rugby after all.

So it brings me to a decision. Do I get the 5D...more then adequate for my needs, except for fast action shots, comes with a 12MP sensor..and excellent IQ. Or do I get the 1DIIN, 8.2MP, great for fast shots, and that sweet 1series body. The thing that keeps bringing me back to the 5D is the IQ.....It is really nice...though I have never seen a 5D and a 1DIIN pic printed on paper..

Or do I wait and see what comes out, though I assume the replacement for the 1DIIN will be more the current 1DIIN (with 580EX) which I can get for £2100.

In many regards, is 8.2MP more then adequate if I only wish to print to A4 size? At this point I am leaning to the 1DIIN...the weathersealing and build quality also means I do not have to pamper it...

Any advice, would be much appreciated. Especially from someone that owns both...

Cheers
Marty

I can not make a personal comment on the 5D,but I have heard plenty of positive press from users.

I use the 1dmk2n.An excellant camera and more than good enough for A4(and A3) The 1Dmk2N is as many will prpbably agree,a bit of a tank-well built, solid and resists the elements well.

The 5D is I believe physically a lot lighter in weight,so this is a plus if weight is a restriction, having said that I manage my 1D despite spinal injuries, but it does get rather heavy after a while, however its design fits well to large hands.
I am sure you will receive positive comments too about the 5D.

I should imagine at the decision time it may be a weight saving issue or weather resistance that forces your choice.Either way they are both very good cameras.

Its the operator that makes the difference. (I do hope that does not start a string of comments)
--Good luck with your final choice.

I have a 20d and 1dMKIIN, but do differerent photography than you.

I done a lot of travelling and been photography for 50 years, so perhaps I may comment.

For the lenses you have I'd recommend the 5d. Wide angles are nice for travels and scenes and I think the full frame of the 5d would go extremely well with your lenses. The 1dmkIIN really shires in fast action and sports and build quality. Thw weight and attention are a little too much for travel and your requiremnets, althought the improvements over you 10d would be noticable.

It's obvioulsly really your decision and I feel odd making a suggestion, but I'm sure you'll be happy with either camera.

i have 2-1DmkIIn's and a 5D. since the 5D is newer to my collection i have been picking it up more lately especially for my (just horsing around) photography.

with that said i have come to the conclusion that...although many here will state that the 5D actually foucues in "low light" better that the 1D series...i simply conclude that this is far from the truth. everyone knows that the 1D is a much more able AF module than the 5D but the 5D was considered by many to be quicker and more reliable in low light....FALSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i love the 5D IQ, but will not be taking it as the sole body for certain low light situations where i need to reliably aquire focus. although its not terrible, the fact of the matter is that the 1D series is very accurate. the 1DMKIIn does take a little bit to "lock" but when it does it holds with no hunting and is usually on the mark.

on my gigs i usually have at least 3 bodies with me loaded with different lenses for quick chaning. here i am happy to use any of the cameras. on my own in less demaning settings i may only take one body and one or two lenses...this i where i am rethinkng the 5D especially when the AF will be a factor.

i like the feel of both bodies although very different in weight. the interface on the 5D is simpler and easier to me but i am still OK with the 1D series. IQ is a little better on the 5D not by much but usually shows up the most in its shootiing in low light. the 1D is very good but the 5D is the best!

the extra pixels dont mean a lot to me at least not a deal breaker but with that said, its ability to crop in on the pic can be handy at times.

if i could only have one or the other, i would without doubt pick the 1DMKIIn. you know when you are holding this body you are holding the real deal and very serious!

good luck

I just took delivery of a Mk II n

Moved up from a 350D. Staggering piece of kit!! Smile hasn't gone in nearly a week.

Point than no one has picked up on yet... It comes packaged in what is without doubt the best box in the world!!

Images from my 350 were excellent, I just wanted bigger buffer, better autofocus and more battery life.

Thanks for you advice guys.

Much appreciated. Always good to ask the people in the know.

I understand the different situations that I would use both cameras, but if I was only to get one...

I think I am leaning towards a 1DMK2N. Always wanted a pro body, and the weather sealing is a bonus for me.

Though I am telling myself to wait till the end of Feb just in case..

1. Something new is released during the Super bowl...never know.
2. Something is released during the PMA.

Though I am hoping that they will not release anything as my trigger finger is on the buy button right now :)

Thanks again...
