Hi, I would appreciate your help in choosing a Canon Powershot SD camera, probably the 700, 800 or 900.

I’m basically an “Auto” shooter, although I do know to switch to “night/slow synch” so when you take a picture in front of a Las Vegas casino at night the background is visible. If I read about a good shooting tip, I'll use it, but am not really familiar with setting shutter speed, ISO, etc.

I'm mainly going to use the camera for baby pictures (2-month old), at parties, and for vacations. Mostly indoors, but also at the zoo, beach, etc. I would also like to take short video clips w/sound.

From reading the reviews, it sounds like image stabilization is important to capture indoor baby shots without having to use the flash, which is why I am leaning toward the 3 models listed. I was also thinking about the Fuji F30, but was turned off about having to post-process bright outdoor shots.

I was pretty set on the 800 for its wide-angle lens, but this and other sites said the IQ is not as good as the 700 or 900. I mostly print 4x6, although I do occasionally crop/enlarge and do some Photoshop editing.

It seems like the reviews are saying the 800’s IQ would be good enough for me. For comparison, I currently have an Olympus C-50 (5 MP) that gives me great pictures but I would like something faster and video with sound. I was going to get a new Oly stylus but I like having the zoom ring around the shutter release, and it seems that they are concentrating more on DSLRs. Also, I only have "original speed" xD cards, so even with another Oly I'd probably be investing in new "H" cards.

Any ideas on the practical differences between the SD700, 800 and 900 for a user like me? And for the 700 v. 900, is it just more $ for more megapixels?

If IS only important for long-tele shots, should I just wait for the new A series that are supposed to come out next month?

Thanks for any suggestions.

You've asked a lot of questions and I hate to see them possibly go unanswered. You may not be aware,, but the questions have been asked and answered so many times in the forum.

Have you tried a forum search? You will get a wealth of information about all three.

And you can compare there features here:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_sd700is%2Ccanon_sd800is%2Ccanon_sd900&show=all

Quick answer: all are fine cameras

SD700IS if you prefer telephoto - excellent build quality (I love mine!)

SD800 if you prefer wide angle - very good build quality

SD900 probably the best image quality of all three; no IS. Exceptional build quality.

IMHO, you don't need to consider the megapixel count when making a decision. Six is more than enough for most of us who don't make large prints. 10 MP is an overkill for most.

All the best with your decision.
