Nikon software and MS Vista

I have NC 4.4 and NX with Vista Ultimate (32bit). I do have the final build of Vista.

Both of them work just fine on my system. I had 64bit OS installed at one time (pre RTM) and i believe they worked ok as well. I can't speak for any other Nikon software as i have not used them.

I am reading that quite a few of you are running NX on Vista. I cannot get it to work. When it starts up it asks for the Registration number. When I enter it, I am again shown the registration screen without any of my data included. If I click to continue, it abbends with a .NET error.

I am running the RTM version of Vista Ultimate from MSDN. This is the final version.

If anyone had any isses which they figured out how to fix, I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Thanks

It is certainly prudent to wait service pack 1 or 2 before installing Vista. As usual for most softwares the new OS is probably unfinished when launched!

together with Photoshop CS2, w/o major issues (you have to run it in admin mode the 1st times to enter license key,.. but later on don´t need this any more) on a Dell Inspirion 9400 (2GB RAM) on Ultimate Edition x86.

Also DigitalPro4 (latest alpha) works fine and I heard that DxO is working on their Vista-compatibility.

and Photoshop CS2 on Vista Ultimate x86

So pls post if you tested and it failed or if it worked, not what you heard 2nd-hand.

The only software in my work-flow currewntly not running is DxO (but I heard from them that they are working on Vista compatibility). A colegue of mine is running DxO inside a WinXP VirtualPC machine under Vista as work-around (where I´m waiting to see if I need to go this road or they release the next version before I need to fix an image with DxO).

like all new software releases, vista will have a publicity launch that will tell us all how good it is. And in the future, it probably will be and I guess that those of us that own a windows machine will buy it.

But, I am in the position of using XP Pro, which fulfills my needs,....for the present.

I don't know what it was like in other parts of the world 30 odd years ago, but down here in Australia, Holden used to bring out a new model every year, they still do. The difference back then was this. I will quote a couple of release years.

1963~ the EJ holden was released with the 131 cubic inch grey motor and semi round rear tail lights.

1964~ we had the release of the EH holden, basically the same body shape, but with rectangular tail lights and the options of a 161, 179 and the "massive" 186 cubic inch Red engines. This second release model was a massive refinement of the the year before.
Next 2 years we experienced the same transition of the 1965 HD to the 1966 HR.

Looking back, we only remember the classics, 1964 and 1966, no one talks about the 1963 and 1965 models.

So, I am guessing that the first release of Vista will be like our 1963 holden. An improvement on what was available prior, but not that much. Even with the beta testing of Vista prior to general public release, Microsoft is going to have a lot of work in front of it ironing out bugs and we will see SP1 and SP2 for Vista (1964 holdens) as the year progresses. How can it not? There are going to be issues existing and issues created as technology crashes forwards into the future.

So, I am content to sit in my cabin in the mountains, away from the maddening pace of the cities and type away on my XP Pro equipped laptop with full functionality for all my software and watch and wait, avoiding the media hype. One day I will buy Vista, but that day is a way off yet.

I am running NC 4.4.0, View 6.1.3, Transfer, NX 1.0, Photoshop CS2, CS3 Beta, Lightroom, PhotoMechanic, a ton of plugins, under Vista Ultimate standalone on a Dell XPS Gen 1, P4 3.4Ghz and also on a Desktop under VMWARE WORKSTATION on a HP 3.4Ghz machine... no problems so far.

If in doubt, run Vista in a VM and test out your apps.

I'm running NX on Vista ultimate RTM. It works great. You just have to install the correct .NET framework.

ummm, yest it does.

My Eye1 display 2 is working great on Vista.

I wish Nikon would port NX to Linux, then I could dump MS Windows altogether.
