I had to re-install NikonView 4 and now when I connect my camera via USB and power it on, the hour glass appears on my Windows 98 Pc for a minute then goes away. The image transfer tool never starts. When I turn the camera off, same thing. I did check the preferences and it is set to Auto Start. Any help is appreciated.

The little app that searches for the camera probably isn't getting started on windows startup, for some reason. Try this:

Click the start button -> Run...
Enter "msconfig"
goto the "Startup.ini" tab

look for something like "NkViewMon.exe" its checkbox should be ticked. If there are more than one entry for "NkViewMon.exe" make sure only one is checked.
"OK" that and restart.

Hopefully it'll work then.

Costco sells a USB Sandisk card reader for $17.99, loaded it up today and drag & drop was never simpler. The computer sees it as a hard drive, you access with explorer...muy simple. Steve's Digicams has a quick review with similar results....Throw the NikonView Disk away!

It's a bit of a crank, but can't be a problem if Nikon does not reissue.

Just better make sure you installed Nkv4 once successfully before you buy a card reader. The install is not too difficult except when you don't know upgrades on a computer. (eL)

This really bugs me! Why buy a card reader when the camera is a card reader itself?!

Even if Nikon Vew isn't running the compact flash in the camera will appear as a hard drive so you can just "drag and drop" to your hearts content.

Don't waste your money!

Good Job! Why it has to be this way I don't know. Call it Nikon character.
