Hello everyone, I am trying to decide what camera to buy, and I need some advice. I am going on a trip to Alaska, and I want to get a good digital camera with a nice zoom so that I can take some good pictures of the wildlife. The 10x zoom on the c700 caught my attention, but the 2.1 megapixels scared me because I'm not sure if that is good quality.

While inquiring about the c700, others suggested that I take a look at the c2100. It has been discontinued, but I found it for $500...which is cheaper than the c700. Both have the same zoom and same amout of megapixels.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

These were taken with my 2100.

Don't be too worried about the C700 or C2100 being "only" 2.1mp. That's plenty unless you like to have very large prints made (bigger than 8x10).

They both take great pics.

My personal preference of the two is the C2100. The main reason is the image stabilization. The C700 wasn't out when I bought my 2100 but even if the 700 had been out, I would have still bought the 2100

The image stabilization works, and works well. If you are going to take pics at or near full zoom (wildlife), I highly recommend the 2100 over the 700.

I think the C2100 menu system (it IS a computer with a lens!) is easier to learn than the C700. Many of the frequently used features are accessed by a button on the camera body. The buttons are small but spaced far enough apart.

Is size matters, get the C700. I don't think the C2100 is all that much bigger or heavier.

You will really appreciate the 10x zoom for your trip to Alaska.

Yes I have a suggestion, do a search on c2100 vs. c700 and you will find lots of posts, I mean pages and pages of them. The topic has been discussed a lot before around here and it will save you a lot of time too.
Good Luck

I think you can buy c700 for $449 at http://www.bhphotovideo.com . The price is not mentioned at their site. But they'll email the price to you. I believe some other online stores also have the same price.

I think the C2100 is more difficult to get. You can buy at many walmarts and compusas for $499. I believe this is the lowest price now.

About 'C2100 vs C700' - this topic has been beaten to death on this forum. The following thread is probably the most recent.

This topic has been hashed to death previously, resulting in some
rather ummmm..... "spirited" discussions.

The 700 and 2100 share many similar qualities, both Olympus, both
10x optical zoom, both 1600x1200 image size, etc. However, there
are a number of unique features to each that do stand out. The
big pluses in the 2100's favor are its image stabilization and the
low light focus assist lamp. For the 700, it's manual white balance
and a faster maximum shutter speed setting. If size matters, the 700
is more compact than the 2100.

You really can't go too wrong with either one.

can do in capable hands:

Hi cutman.

Personally I'd choose the C-2100 because I don't like too light cameras and Image Stabilisation can make a lot of difference. If size is important you may be better off with the C-700.

If you can find one, you might consider getting an Olympus B-300 1.7x teleconverter to get you to 17x zoom. The B-300 is fairly big and another thing to carry around but it's the best quality teleconverter you can get.

If high speed is of importance to you and you can live with 1.5MP (effective 1.3) as opposed to 2.1MP (effective 1.9) you should consider the E-100RS as a third option. Both the C-2100 and C-700 have been reviewed here although some people think Phil had a defective C-700 on his hands. The E-100RS was reviewed at Steves-Digicams where you'll also find reviews of the other two:

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2001_reviews/e100rs.html

Good luck in Alaska. Whichever camera you choose their're all great in their own way and will all make nice prints up to 8x10.

Hello,

they are both great cameras. The c700 is now 499$ in many local stores but i paid 435$ online shipping included at buydig.com.

here are some specs for both cameras and some of my opinion on what is the difference between the 2 cameras:

C700 specs:

small and light
1/1000 shutter speed user selectable.
10x optical zoom
Full manual white balance control
no vigneting in wide angle (even with PL and UV filters on)
USB autoconnect, quick and easy to download photos, just like another hard disk.
record movie at 15fps and up to ISO 800
great battery life, can go all day LCD ON with 2 sets of Nihm 1600
EVF
ISO 800 (more noisy than 100, but still usable if not underexposed)

plastic in back pannel only, other parts and front is magnesium alloy.

lens thread on outer tube (need adapter), adapter available in 49mm, 52mm and 55mm (5$ to 19$) but 3 filters can be stacked together without vigneting at 52mm

LCD 1.5" 114,000 pixels, brightness can be adjusted, dark layer for clear viewing under bright sunlight.

c700 disadvantages:

no lamp assisted focus for low light
some chromatic aberation in backlited subjects
some noise in underexposed photos.
no remote control, only timer
does not come with batteries and charger (18$-25$ investment)
EVF is hard to see in very low light

no image stabilizer, hard to handheld full zoom for shutter speed slower than 1/30

Most people can handheld up to 1/60 without problem at full zoom, but will need a tripod for slower shutter speed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

c2100 specs:

10x zoom with image stabilization

1/800 maximum user selectable (1150 can be acheive if pointing at a bright object and if light is strong, but is not user selectable and only possible in very specific situations.)
ISO 400
lamp assisted focus for low light (range around 10 feet)
EVF
record movie at 12.5fps
remote control (3 seconds delay)
come with one set of battery and charger
49mm lens thread. stepup ring is recommanded to avoid more vigneting (5$)
LCD 1.8" 114,000 pixels, no coating or dark layer, brightness can be adjusted.

c2100 disadvantages:

bigger and heavier (632 grams) than the c700 (310.5 grams)
1/800 user selectable, (1/1000 user selectable on the c700)
No manual white balance.

NO USBautoconnect, need the Camedia software (free) or a USB reader/writer (app. 25$).
connectivity problem with Windows XP
some chromatic aberation in strong contrast areas.

some camera will have vigneting in wide angle, although not all seam to have this problem.
Will have more risk to get vigneting if using UV and PL together.
all plastic body
Limited to ISO 400

Battery life is not as good as with the c700, especially while using the IS system.

I own both cameras. If i had to chose it would be the 2100 hands down.It is a little bigger but it feels better for me to hold. You will love the assist light and the image stablizer.--jazzman

I would go with the 2100. In my opinion, the 700 feels like a toy compared to the 2100. The 2100 just feels more like a "real " camera to me. The 2100 has the focus assist light which helps with low light photos, the 700 does not have this. The 2100 has image stabilization, which helps out a great deal when taking pictures at full zoom, the 700 does not have this either. The 2100 also comes with remote, batteries and a charger, the 700 comes with none of these and the 700 also cannot use a remote, which I use very often for night shots. Someone mentioned that the 2100 is not good for night shots and I disagree. If you know how to work the camera properly the night shots you get with the 2100 are great. If you look at Oly's cameras, you will notice the 3040 and the 3020, the 3020 being kind of a "stripped down" model of the 3040. In my opinion, the 700 is like a "stripped down" 2100, small and cute so you can put it in your pocket but lacking many features that the 2100 has. Have you checked out Phil's reviews of both cameras? I would recommend doing that also to get more info on both cameras.

If you've been on the forum long, you know I am a Uzi fan, and for good reason. The long stabilized lens, and the fun factor. If those cams are your deciding two, it's no contest whatsoever: Get the Uzi.

I'm sorry I can't help you on Alaskan wildlife, but if you take a short "gander" at these pics, it will give you an idea why I picked the Uzi. All are taken at max zoom, handheld. If you can imagine a moose instead of a goose, then you have the general idea what I mean.

Hi Daniella.

I'm not taking sides here but I have to agree with Terry that taking sharp handheld shots at 10x full zoom is quite a task. I've seen you're pictures and they're great. I don't know how much shooting you've done previously with film but you really have a natural eye for composition. I have fairly steady hands myself if I don't drink too much coffee but at full zoom I don't think I can go below 1/30-1/40 and get sharp pictures without IS. With IS I can get decent shots as low as 1/4-1/2 sec if I really concentrate.

Hi Maxven,

I have no problem taking handheld shot at full zoom for the type of photo i take..mostly above 1/60 and most speed i use is between 1/200 and 1/1000. At 1/200 its quite easy to handheld the camera and for me its still that easy at up to 1/60, then i need to concentrate more and i need to wait for the right moment when i see i have less motion.

I don't use much speed below 1/30 though, its not some thing i need to use often. surely between 1/30 and 1/2 IS is very usefull and you probably never get a blured shot at that speed with IS on while i would probably get many blurred shots. When i do need speed that slow i bring a tripod, like for my waterfall photo i used 3 seconds exposure i think.

I guess it is just a range of speed that i don,t use enough to compensate for the big size of the c2100.

but i agree though...for Alaska with the shivering etc..i would probably better off with a c2100 ! LOL

I hate cold and i shiver very easily when its cold :)

I have the C700 and love it. The size and the feel of the camera for me is just right. There are times in low light that I would love to have the Image Stabilization of the C-2100 or the E-100rs. But most of my shooting is not in low light. When it is I use a tripod or a monopod. I keep the C700 in my coat pocket and it goes everywhere with me. But both cameras are great and the image stabilization is a big plus. By the way, the C-700 is $449 at Circuit City and the C-2100 is $499 at CompUSA and Walmart. Both are great buys. Just go down to CompUSA, because they carry both cameras, and see which one feels right to you. Good luck and which ever one you choose, you will totally enjoy the world of digital photography. I know I do.
