Cheapest Place for Electronics in New York?

Hi Dave,

As you probably know, there are scores of discount electronic stores in NYC from 14th-57th Streets. A few of the well-known/reputable places are:

17th Street Photo Supply, Inc.
34 West 17th St.
NEW YORK NY 10011
Phone: 212-366-9870

Adorama
42 West 18th Street
NEW YORK NY 10011
Phone: 212-741-0401

B&H Photo - Video - Pro Audio
420 Ninth Ave.
NEW YORK NY 10001
Phone: 800-336-7916 / 212-502-6236

Like many electronic places here, to maximize their profits, the sales pitches can be aggressive (and the bait & switch not far away).

For IPODs, etc, sometimes stores like Best Buy or J & R, actually have the best sale prices and easy return policies. Your friend could check for sales online before going to stores.

If your friend knows prices, and likes to haggle, he may be able to talk his way into a better price at any of these places. It still happens!

The cheapest places, or the apparently cheapest places, are places your friend should stay away from. Far, far away.

NYC is a great place to visit (or to grow up!) but it also has plenty of tourist-ripoff places. Someone else posted a list of reputable places. Your friend should go there.

Actually I have not found B&H to be very pushy. The sales clerks there have even talked me out of buying something they felt I didn't really need. But they are very knowledgeable and they all seem to try to find something in their inventory that matches what you need.

If B&H has what your friend needs, then just buy it there and be done with it.

CAUTION: The USA has different standards for mains electric power and TV. For the power mains, be sure to get a "universal voltage" device, unelss it is only battery-powered. For video, be sure that the device is PAL rather than the US standard NTSC. Same issue with buying DVDs. They may not play in a European DVD player.

One reason reputable places are reputable is they don't use agressive sales pitches and don't employ bait-n-switch tactics.

--Tell you friend to CAREFULLY find out what comes with each product he wants to buy so he won't be sold them as "accessories" by the creatures in New York.
